Anyone have their steering ever quit working?

Jeez man... That is scary! I'm glad it didn't come out while you were driving!

It would be pretty hard for it to work it's way complete out since the bolt is tilted downwards and is long as heck, lol. But of course still not anywhere near safe to be driving like that. Luckily this was caught sooner than later!

Ryan1975 looks like you still have the older style washers/sleeves setup for those spec ride bushings...maybe this would be a good time to call up SPC and get the updated style just to be safe. See here: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-g...-light-racing-product-update.html#post1496195

Also, once it's fixed, you might want to think about throwing on an extra jam nut since there's plenty of thread left on the bolt for one. That's what I did, I think it is a 14mm x 1.5mm thread pitch.

I had not seem that previously. Calling in the AM

$25 (no shipping for updated parts list though that part number was wrong. Enroute today.

How is there a gap on the inside edge of the UCA? Maybe because of the old bushing / washer design?

I have installed two sets of LR UCA's (one on my rig and another on an FJ) and both were a very tight fit on the inside edges. I had to use grease and force them into position so I could line them up for the long bolt to go through.

Edit: I think I see what happened on the above picture. It looks like the left mount has slid towards the front of the vehicle and the bolt pass through is pushing the sleeve out of the left side. Therefore, the whole UCA has slid to the right.

I thought this too initially...but then do you think the bolt pass through can push past the inner washer? It almost looks like it's actually bending a little bit since the weight of the truck is on the UCA. The sleeve sliding out the left side just seems like it's sliding out a bit from gravity?

OR, the other possibility is this could be one of those defective ones that were made incorrectly. Check out this thread Ryan1975 and measure your UCAs just to be safe! http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/151125-light-racing-uca.html

Good point. You are right, the pass through would not go through the washer. Maybe the left side did not have an inner washer installed. Can't tell from the pic.

When you have it fixed can you post an 'after' photo? I'm interested to see the before & after. That's a scary failure!

Ryan's corvette life..... one big sink hole :fencing: :rapture:

(either that.. or it's the hole he hit trying to pull one out that messed up his steering...)

Okki

I thought it was funny, Okki.

I wouldn't be quick to call this a failure. Seems more like whoever installed it did not torque the nut to spec.

Exactly! Somebody forgot to do this.......

a) Tighten the nut.
Torque: 115 N·m (1173 kgf·cm, 85ft·lbf)

You have to take the brake line bracket loose on the frame rail in order to get a torque wrench on that nut and torque it properly and it's a fairly important torque.Too loose and it can back off and too tight and it squishes the bushings and doesn't let the UCA rotate freely leading to squeaks and premature bushing failure.

Luckily no animals were harmed in the making of that horror movie!:wink2:

All buttoned back up. Going to get full alignment in a few weeks when I have the replacement parts. Dealership only charged 1hr labor for this.
