Anyone running lift with 285/75/16 or 255/85/16 tires with no fender flares?

I know I have seen a few here and there, but I don't recall who runs these set ups. But the thing I would like to know is if people are cool with, or prefer no flares compared to the skinney black flares or limited style flares. Are the flying rocks too much?

I am getting close to pulling the trigger on a Sonoran Steel 1.2 lift, and possibly the suggested wheel upgrade from my stock 5 star to get the 16x8 with 4.5" of BS to clear UCAs. I am trying to look far enough down the road to make sure I have room for Tundra brake upgrades and what not.

I am leaning more towards the 285/75/16 set up, but am curious if their going to start eating the paint on my rig without flares? I don't mind the look at all, maybe even prefer it, but most rigs I see on here seem to run with limited flares.

I had my limited flares off for almost a year (pics in my build). But I finally put my flares back on and I'm glad I did. With a 285/75 and 4" bs it was pretty wide and tossed a lot of crap up on the doors and into my sliders. No paint damage though, just messy and annoying

Check my build link in my signature. Mine throws no rocks that would be stopped by the flares.

I've got the chrome trim w/285/75r16 on 1" adapters w/ss 1.2
Didn't take me long to make something to keep the dirt and rocks off. Took a pic after a day of wheeling when I had the left side on and the right side off to compare the usefulness...

I don't believe the 16x8 w/4.5" backspacing will clear the a-arms with 285/75r16...also possibly, depending on the style, the tundra brakes.

I have 285's with 8" wide, 3.25" backspacing wheels and no fender flares at all. The tires stick out almost 3" past the body.

Cool info and pics guys!

So on the one hand, my runner if far from perfect. It has picked up its fair share of minor dents and whatnot, (one pretty good scrape passenger rear) from previous owners. Some of these rigs on here look as if they have rolled off the showroom floor. I am not in a rush to trash it or anything, but it's a 4runner. It is made to get dirty!

I had a the rear, driver's side cargo glass shatter driving on I-5 on my way to work, like, the week after I picked it up. That was a real PITA. I know it is fairly unlikely that this was my own truck's doing. Maybe it was a rock from kicked up from someone else, or a funny guy with a pellet gun.. who knows.. But it just got me thinking about my lack of flare.

If I was to add flares, I would like to do something that doesn't require me to punch holes in the body. habanero, I like how you have those flexi flares mounted from the wheel wells. I could see something like this. Does anyone make a "rally-style" soft mud flap? Or is that something you just have to get creative with?

Steve at Sonoran Steel had suggested the 16x8 rims with 4.5 bs to clear the stock UCAs. Maybe I misunderstood what he was saying. I like my stock 5-stars, but if getting the correct width wheels with proper back spacing would prevent rubbing, and or having to replace UCAs, or use wheel spacers, then wouldn't that seem to make the most sense? Am I missing something?

Or you can just run the 255's and forget all your worries... Just saying.

If you wanna be mr skinny on the trail haha! 255s are good from what I've seen, admittedly that's only on Andrews truck but still. 285s with 4.5 bs wheels will be good if you want the wider look. Shouldn't have uca interference and minimal rubbing

Go, not show... :driving:

I honestly prefer the look and my percieved performance of the 255's better.

Go and show :hatsoff:, plus chicks dig wide tires, im sure of it....

Honestly they looked good on your truck. My experience with skinnies before that was on my roommates lifted xterra, and it always made things much worse due to the lack of width. But that is also because the truck was narrow. Never felt sketchy watching yours go up and down stuff.

Yeap, all show here too. Its why I run 305/70r16. Yes it throws rocks, yes they rub when wheeling and rip my flares off sometimes but man they look good!!!

I am leaning a bit more towards 285/75/16, but nothing is set in stone. I need to check out more of both sizes. Although, I have seen someone cram a 255/85/16 into the stock spare tire storage, albeit, aired down. That would seem quite difficult if using a 285/75 tire. How horrible is it to use a smaller diameter spare as an option till the storage option for a full size spare presents itself? All these problems are easily addressed if I had a pile of money sitting around, but like most of us I imagine, I will need to mod in stages as time and money allow.

Mudflaps are what's going to save your paint, not flares, even with limited flares I still get rocks and mud all the way up the sides of the truck.
