Soooo..all the other mods want to keep the political/religion threads going and [MENTION=66316]1engineer[/MENTION] is the lone holdout shutting it down?
Perhaps you can poll the other mods and find out how they feel about this decision? I think you'll find it was the other mods pressuring [MENTION=66316]1engineer[/MENTION] to shut down this little experiment.

The timing just seems ridiculous to me. Why not just let things ride out these last few weeks leading up to the election? I'm sure things will naturally quiet down as the media coverage does.
Like I said, as far back as I can remember there have been political discussions here. Hard to overlook the correlation in timing between our mods sudden personal 180 on the issue of political discussion and the sudden zero tolerance policy that seems to have taken things from 60 to 0 almost overnight here.

Simmering on the back burner is fine but it is now forbidden. So that's not really simmering. That's getting put in to the garbage.

I think its an interesting issue. Is the entire internet considered private property? is there no such thing as 'public space' online, therefore no basis for anyone to claim freedom of speech online?
I know the issues come up in the past with people being banned from sites like twitter for posting things that some disagreed with.

Every domain registered belongs to it`s owner, registrars sometime holding down available domains names in hope to sell it.
Once you registered domain to your name it`s yours as far as you pay registration renewal fee.

Owning your own web hosting servers would be more analogous to owning your own house.
The rules governing posting in a forum would be more like visiting a friend who rents a room by the week in a boarding house. This friend says "if you want to visit me, here's the rules; some are mine, some are from the old lady that rented me the room."
The old lady couldn't afford to buy the rooming house so she rents it from a partnership set up by a bunch of doctors who put in some money to buy a commercial property in town. The place itself is mostly mortgaged, and owned by a bank that is primarily owned by a half dozen or so retirement funds.

I have a question. If being offended is enough to ban something. How about being offended by mods overstepping their bounds. Can we just ban mods?
