hey boss, im only an hour and a half away from you (or you to me) and if you are up for it, i could help you install your bumper the way it needs to be if the shop doesnt want to do it. im in kansas city on the north end.
let me know if you would like a hand installing it. i also have all the tools needed to do any sort of work.

I think the ARB is about 85 lbs, and the Warn M8000 is another 80 lbs, or about 165 with the winch. It dropped my OME 883s about 1".

In my ownership, one doe so far. I've tried to hit others, but they got away... Pics in my build thread, whammed her around 30 MPH. Was going 70, but wasn't afraid. :thumb3:

My guess is that I will be doing the bumper at my shop, once the 4 Runner has the soft metal parts replaced from the deer hit. The body shop told me that the work shold be done by Turkey day. I will have the ARB Monday morning and will be looking for the metal to cut down for the filler pieces for the end caps on the frame. I have a torch, cut off tools, a wire welder (note: have not used it much since I got it, but it is big enough to do this work and more), and a two post lift (if needed). I live in Lebo, Kansas which is basically 95 miles from North Kansas City. I belong to the Genuine Chevy GMC Truck Club of KC, so I get up there on a reasonably regular basis. Maybe you have been to our Truck show that we have every September at the park in Riverside. I printed all of the pictures from "Kid's" build and with that I hope to make it right, the first time. Thanks for the offer, but you are welcome to come down and visit, anytime.
I got into this Tyater with a fair price and the guy that sold it to me is doing the body work for a couple reasons. He really needs the cash and he does good work, so it will be right when it is done. He got the 4 Runner from the first owner after a deer hit, so it has been through it before.

Just an FYI. I found that the easiest way to install the bumper is to use an engine hoist (cherry picker) and tie a rope or tow strap around the hoops. It's easy for one man to handle that way and you can make small adjustments and get it right into place easily (without banging things up or hurting yourself).

That is not a problem in my shop. I have one of those sitting there just waiting to make my life easier. Turn up the stereo and don't llisten for the wife's input.

fast track to a divorce and being left with half your stuff, but paying for all of hers...
I actually used a two post lift to mount and install my own front bumper and winch recently; it made it really easy to line up and bolt everything in place

NOW, for the big questions. For those that capped the ends of the frame rails, how did you decide on where you wanted the hole drilled in the plate and the nut welded. Did you use a metric bolt that came with the kit or get one from a local supplier? Just curious.

well i did it the hard way, i welded in the plate, without welding on a bolt to the back side... -got ahead of myself. anyhow thankfully i used thick 3/8 steel for my end-cap so i just marked the end-cap with the bumper mocked up, and drilled and tapped the end-cap, and just ran my bolt into the end-cap itself. but if i was going to do this again, id tack the end-cap in place, and then put the bumper on, mark the end-cap, then pull the bumper off and pop the end-caps off and drill the holes just a little small. then id weld the nut on the back side, and tap from the back to the front, so the nut and the end-cap are threaded. then weld in the threaded plate and nut to be your new end-cap and start installing.

I just drilled a hole in the center of the plate and welded a 3/8" or 7/16" nut behind it (can't remember which, but thinking 7/16"). I used a grade 8 bolt and nut for overkill (even though my welds would probably fail before a grade 5 bolt broke). If I had a metric 12mm nut/bolt I'd have used that instead, but the bolt box didn't have any (it never has what I really need).
The nice thing about the endplate is that you don't have to use the sleeve on the vertical bolt on the mount - you won't crush the frame rail with a 1/4" plate welded on the end.

Thanks. The bumper will be at the shop n Monday afternoon. Got to get the old bumper out of the way and the deer hair out of the joints before we install the bumper.

Any experience on how tough the ARB bumper really is? The reasons for install, is centered around bambi bumpin while driving. I was wondering what experience some have had with getting into tight spots with this bumper and how well it stands up to issues. The ARB guys say that it is tough, due to the metal bends in the design.

I did mine a couple months ago and it came with 'end caps' that are actually extensions for the Tacoma. I just cut off the 'end' portion of the block and welded it onto my frame rails, and the nut for mounting is right in place.

The blocks that you used are actually part of the install kit for the ARB bumper? We have not opened the box that came with the bumper, yet. It is sitting on the shop floor at the body shop

No personal experience hitting animals, but as I understand it, there is more of problem with 'roos' in Oz than deer here in the US, and the main reason Aussies buy bull bars (and ARB is one of the most popular) is because hitting a kangaroo is so common.

They also have to be government approved, which the ARB is.
I wouldn't go looking for deer to hit, but if you do I'd rather have a strong bumper than the plastic and sheet metal decoration that comes on the 4Runner.

I don't go looking for them, but I have already hit two this year. I hit one on the 24th of October, with my daily driver and then 3 weeks later I hit another with the 4 Runner, just 2 days after I purchased it. Both of which did damage that I didn't want to have to deal with. I have bagged more deer this year than most deer hunters in my area. That is what I get for hunting on public grounds without a rifle.

Yes that frame rail extension/cap that he used comes with the bumper kit. If you look through my build thread, you will see it in the pictures where I laid all the parts out
