The 4Runner has always had it's own, unique look that was different from other Toyota vehicles. Toyota seems to have a plan to give a similar look across their models. This is sad, because the "Toyota look" is very generic (Rav4, Highlander, etc.).

I say to a certain extent... the first and second gen 4Runner, from the front doors forward was identical to the truck counter part. But since the truck became Tacoma, the 4Runner (third gen) started to look more different and distinct. And all 4Runners have always looked good--4Runner is easily one of the best looking SUVs on the market.

I don't think having the same look is necessarily a bad thing, Tahoes, Suburbans and Silverados look good. But just that Toyota right now doesn't have exactly the good looks to share it across their entire line.

I agree, the RAV4 and Highlander could look better. Their trucks look good, but why did they use the generic Highlander rear on the Sequoia.

Toyota isn't exactly known for making great looking vehicles (I say their styling is good most of the time, but some of them need a lot of work, i.e. Echo). The only exception are the second gen MR2 and 4Runner.

Note the handle on the rear cargo door is on the left hand side.

I don't see a handle. I enlarged it in Photoshop, but I still don't see a handle. I think you're seeing a logo.

The profile of the vehicle looks far too low in that last pic to be a 4runner

Well on further review I think the tiny pic on bottom right of the article on the first page of this thread was just a rear shot of the current Prado cuz it has the same unique rear pillar it shares with the current GX. The bigger pic has a C pillar like the 4Runners traditionally have, so it's obviously not the same vehicle as the little pic.

The things I like about the bigger pic are it still has 6 lug wheels and has pretty good ground clearance and front and rear departure angles, so it looks to still be body on frame. The little 1st gen RX style windows by the A pillars are a little funky IMO but overall it's not too bad - could have been a lot worse

IIRC, it's required by law in Japan and to eliminate blindspots, which the side mirror camera on the LX570 would probably take care of cleanly.

Does Winter 09 mean between January and March of 09? If so that means the 4th gen 09 has a short production year

you are right. I also thought of that and it didn't make sense to me. Espicially with SUV sales dropping, I see no point of toyota rushing in their release. Maybe he ment end of the year, like Nov-Dec 09. I never asked for clarifications from him

I don't think the next gen would really sell. It doesn't really look rigid enough. 4Runners are always known for their toughness and have a good rep for long lasting.
Just by the styling of the truck, it doesn't seem like it is meant for 4wheeling.
Just look at the Rav4, thats a good compact SUV but its not meant to offroad.

Where have you seen DEFINITIVE pictures of the next 4Runner version?
Everything I have seen posted is speculation,misinterpertations and unconfirmed assumptions. Nothing definate on AutoSpies yet.
To my knowledge it will be shown at the 2009 Detriot Auto Show Jan 11-25 2009.
