I just padlock the garage door/rail lock when we're out on trips. Block any access to any hooligan who might want to get in.

To anyone needing help finding a Gentex mirror, I would advise you to just visit your local U Pull lot for the best prices. I just pulled 3 more to wire up in the family fleet of vehicles (cheaper than buying a universal clicker for each vehicle!). The most common will be Auto Dimming + Homelink (all that I really need). You can find them with the compass and or temperature add-on if you're lucky.
You want post 2000's vehicles. The newer, the better.
Next, Gentex mirrors are used in a lot of vehicles as upper or premium options. Base model something? Pass. Look at a vehicle/trim that you know is decked out. GM trims have mirrors with their proprietary OnStar button. I pass on these also.
You'll need a small star bit to loosen the base of the mirror (keep the screw!), the pig tail (cut off as much as you can, fish it out of the headliner), the plastic piece that'll cover the exposed wire harness (careful, its fragile), and the mirror itself.
**If you're pulling a mirror with the TEMP function, you'll need the temperature dongle. It's usually mounted in front of the radiator/crash beam. I have yet to find one in my yard as the crash beam is ripped out when the wreckers pull the engine and transmission.**
So far, I've pulled Gentex mirrors off 2x Prius, Nissan Maxima, and an Infinity M35. Paid $10.00 a piece. Once you know which vehicles to hunt for / which to avoid, you can find them pretty easily.

Tried going to the U-Pull it. Found a couple that could work, but they were blue/green. They wanted $20 a piece for them. Pretty steep for something that may not even work.
Anyway, found one on ebay. Amber, auto-dimming with compass, $50 shipped.
Wondering if you HAVE TO disconnect the negative on the battery to do the install?

I rebelled. I didn't. Test wire harness for power (if you're unsure which wires). Pull key from ignition, pull harness plug and trim back the electrical tape to give you more slack, tap, tap, tap, reconnect harness plug and done.
I had to go all the way down to the all the way to the A-pillar and under the dash. easier than expected.
sorry to hijack this thread, but i think this issue is somehow related:
anyone know what is the color of the wire in the wire harness located close to the map light? my mic keeps on disconnecting, i might have loosen the pins when I tried to look for the +/- source...
I tried to push all the pin connector several times already but after a while, the mic disconnects again... I'm planning to hard wire it instead.

I put the mirror in my 04 but after I got my 07 I couldn't find one reasonable enough so i picked up one from an 01 Tahoe for three bucks at the junkyard to use til I find a Toyota cheap.
Edit, I've since swapped one out for a $5 one I pulled out of a Camry. Works mint.

You need to grab the affiliated temp sensor and wire it in. Usually see them on the radiator support beam.
Configure your mirror to run *C or *F.

I think so.
I have one in my Acura TL and it works great, performance and diming levels are spot on … it’s something I notice and miss when jumping into my 4Runner or Silverado.
Integrated DVR seems like a really good idea too.
