Aux fuel tank

And will my idea work?

Your post did get me thinking. What about a reversible transfer pump. Turn it on as you are filling your primary tank and it fills the aux tank. Then when the additional fuel is needed flip the switch so the transfer goes from aux to primary. Only down side I see is the need to tap your primary tank, or share your main sending line. Thoughts?

For example, if I am on the trail and off camber, and flip the switch to send fuel from aux tank to factory tank, but it doesn't drain it, then I go fill aux tank and think I had emptied, but it has a gallon or 2 still in it. Where would the 'extra' fuel go?

Plus, my wiring skills are very elementary. So I'm trying to keep this as simple as possible.

Assuming you have your tank vent lines tied together with say a T-fitting, the extra fuel would just back up the vent line and be carried by gravity into the other tank (unless there is a one-way valve I'm forgetting).

I have to build my swingout to make room, but once that is done I'm all in on this project. I'm done with jerry cans.

I can show you what I'm thinking. Not really mature enough to post though. I think you're on the right track.

The only technical issue I found with an aux tank is integration with the main. Its really easy to solve imo. I've seen a lot of really complicated discussions, and its really not that difficult.

I'm going to use a prado 90 style filler top graphed onto a 3rd gen tube. Its a hole/tube for each the main and aux tank. A simple switch to control a pump from the aux to a tap on the main fill tube. No issues that way except a bit of time to pump from the aux to the main. Overfill just recirculates but cant overpressure anything. AU designs are like this.

I've got to drop by death's and get a tube to modify. The tube is the only piece that will require much effort.

Only problem I had with that was the cost. That Prado or LC filler valve is $$$ if not $$$$. I love my truck but there is a limit.

I've dropped my spare and jacked the tank into place to test fit it, but have yet to secure it. I did not take pics of that. Right now the tank is just taking up space in my garage. I just got my steel and tubing bender set up for building my tire swing out so that project comes first. I'll take pics when I start to fit the tank but I'm sure I'm a month away from starting. Still am thinking up ways to fill the Aux tank though. Trying to snake a 2 inch filler tube between the body and frame and around all the suspension parts will be a nightmare. Using a smaller line and pump to fill it off the primary tank sure sounds better.
 
So I am on board with this whole camry tank thing. LKQ has got a sale kicking next month so I will be headed down to scalp me some parts.

On the list are a few items but the camry tank is among them for sure. Since the filler is on the wrong side I was thinking something like a flexible filler hose might be able to correct that deficiency without having to do welding and the like. I'm going to have to do a body lift anyways so I should have room to tuck all that up and still have room not to kink the hose.

BTW not looking to add a tank....I'm just replacing. I have a 4 banger gas sipper so not too worried about the range.
 
So online by me right now has an 2000 f350 tank I'm looking at seeing how big it is. Probably damn huge but we will see.

Edit. 31x29x15 is about the same size as the spare tire.

I'll tease this a bit. 20 gallon tank with sending unit out of a Cherokee, 68 lbs of steel plate, bunch 'o tubing, marine gas fill neck. Hmmmm....

Don't worry more pics to come. 38 gallons total!

OK - the marine grade filler neck I needed just came in. Tonight I have to cut our the cross-member that holds the spare tire for clearance. I'm trying to figure out if I need to weld a new tubular cross-member in a different place or if I can rely on the huge piece of plate steel that will act as my skid to stabilize the frame. I'm leaning towards the plate since the tow package also acts as support.

I'll get pics of the process throughout this weekend.
