Awning mount directly to '16 Trail OEM Roof Rails?

What do you have the brackets mounted to? Drilled through the cross rails?

here is a method i had used when I needed to mount my CVT awning to the oem rails - it was supposed to be temporary and only for the trips i needed the awning, but i kept it like that for a solid 8 months since it served my needs quite well.
1- I used the L bracket that came with the CVT awning and mounted it to the cross bars by remmoving the oem screw and replacing it with a longer screw.
2- I placed double sided tape b/w to bracket and the rails to help with friction and noise (also helped to secure it a bit)
3- I used a hoseclamp to secure the bracket to the cross bar instead of drilling a temporary hole for a screw.
P:S - i have since mounted my awning to a roof rack and can no longer take additional pics

Some of the threaded studs for the stock rack.
bunch of 1/4-20 nuts and bolts.
Works great and lower profile.

I ran unolts over top of rail. Bracket butted up aga8nst bottom of rail.
yeah, i am still planning to get a RTT. maybe i could find something lower.

Went down to Lowe's and picked up 6 L shaped brackets. doubled up on each at all 3 mounting locations. Only had to drill out the bottom holes to a 5/16th to accommodate the larger T-Bolts. Each hole on the bracket is offset to the other hence the crooked mounting(looks straight when all closed up). T-Bolts I had laying around at work. All in all only spent 12 bucks and it sits just how I want, just over the rail as Im a tall person and dont hit my head on the awning when trying to get things out of the back door.

I'm working on an adapter plate that will allow folks to mount standard 8020 extrusions to a standard 4Runner rail. Once it's up there you can bolt anything you want to it and they already make the brackets to bolt to the 8020 stuff.
I just got the 3d printed brackets today to test fit and I've found a shop to cut out the adapter plates. I should know in a week or two if it will work out.
If anyone is interested I'll add pics when I get done.

Not sure what those will be - but 8020 already makes a bunch of different ones that fit. They cost anywhere from ~$3 to $10. Tell me what extrusion you'd like to use and I'd be happy to help you find the correct brackets. They make over 300 different versions of inside corner brackets.

Should work well for attaching 8020 extrusions to your OEM rails. Kinda the whole point of 8020 is not having any custom parts made. I know I made my own, but only because I have all the machining tools and scrap aluminum. Otherwise, the off the shelf brackets are available for any configuration you can imagine.

Not to dig up a quasi-dead thread, but I've been 3d printing a couple sets for 4th gens - never posted it to the 5th sen section because I didn't know they had a similar profile. Happy to print a couple more if anybody's interested.

Spent a little time measuring up the profiles of the roof rails and came up with this design for an awning bracket. Then had my local sheet metal shop laser cut, bend and weld. They offered to powder coat, but I needed them for my trip to Moab this past June, so I primed and painted them. Used rubber sheet to protect the rail finish. 3 weeks of overlanding in Utah and Colorado and a summer of overlanding weekends back home and they held up fine. If I did it again, I'd get them powder coated, paint scratched where the nuts came into contact.
