nope but i will be doing this soon, i just ordered a set of alpine s type speakers... if you havent bought speakers yet, i screwed up and bit on a set on ebay and forgot i did and then bought a full set(front and back) on amazon... if you want ill sell you my extra set for what i got them for off of ebay(its the cheaper of the two prices i paid) -Alpine Type-S SPS-500

Type-S are the ish! I loved those little things.
Anyway, OP, I have not done the mod on the 4Runner, but in the past I did it on an Audi. I simply cut out a circular piece of MDF in the diameter I wanted, screwed it into the stock mounting holes, and then screwed the speaker into the MDF circle that I made. Pretty straight forward, I thought, perhaps it's more difficult with a 4Runner, but I doubt it.

You can fit 5.25 in speakers with adapters. You can get them here:

Eh, I'd say don't bother with the rear door speakers. They aren't going to contribute much to the sound int he front seats. If you havn't done it already, I'd say spend that money elsewhere. I have always heard that the order of impact for improving sound in a car goes something like this
1. Head Unit
2. Front Speakers
3. Front Speaker Amp
4. Sub and amp
5. Rear deck/door speakers
I have seen 3 and 4 swapped alot, but 1 and 2 are pretty much set. Do you already have the HU and front setup that you have always dreamed of? If not, screw the back door speakers, and go for the gusto up front and make all you wildest dreams come true...

i run 6.5 in the rear doors and the sound great with my type x components in the front i run 100 watts to each door.

Sorry to dig up an old thread but I'm looking to install 6.5 speakers in the rear of my 2000. Looks like you used a spacer/adapter behind your speakers back there. Was that specifically for depth purposes to clear the window or for drilling purposes to mount to the door?

I have these 6.5" Polks in my rears doors. MM651 - Car | Polk Audio®
They were a pain to install. I needed to use a spacer to install them to keep the magnet from hitting the window, but then the speaker stuck out too far to fit the door panel back on. Through trial and error i ended up cutting some metal from the door in order to move the speaker down so the magnet would be below the window and still be able to install the door panel.
If I were to do it over I would find some 5 1/4" speakers that will work.
And... having rear speakers makes a difference, it fills in the sound, but this is a personal preference.

not only does it fill in more sound, it gives you better a greater range of adjustments in the sound, as well as allowing you to crank the sound more. if you only had stock speakers back there, you would be limited by them in the volume and bass ect. but with after market speakers (preferably ones that are matching to the fronts) you dont have to worry about cracking or buzzing out speakers. also i found that i needed to trim the door panel a little to get things to fit perfectly with out touching. but now i can max out my head unit with moderate bass and not have any distortion.

Two great front speakers are better than four low-medium quality speakers.
If you have the cash for 4 speakers then do all 4.
I installed Kappa 6x9s in my rear doors. Don't bother, just go with 5.25" speakers.
The 6x9s were easy to install with minor cutting but the magnet sticks out too far and I can't roll my rear door windows down the final 2 inches. I don't have kids in the back messing with the window daily so this isn't a big deal.
Are you going to dyna-mat the doors? I highly suggest it. Best $55 per 2 doors you can spend. At least do both front doors. Absolutely worth it.

I saw on another thread that if you removed the speaker "cup" from the door that 6.5" speakers will fit in the rear doors. I haven't removed the door panels yet to see what this cup thing is. But has anyone tried this?

The reason I'm set of 6.5 is that I have a full set of 4 nice pioneers from my Jeep that I'd like to install and avoid purchasing new speakers. More $$ to spend on a double din =)

I just installed some 6.5's in my rear doors last week. You really need a shallow mount speaker to keep from hitting the window.
I went with these:

It took a decent bit of dremeling away the rest of the plastic cup. I mounted the speaker to a thin piece of wood and then mounted that piece of wood directly to the door. I used some dynamat and silicon in the gaps left between the wood piece and the metal of the door to create a good seal.
It takes a bit of work, but nothing too crazy. Just be willing to do some dremeling and make sure you end up sealing everything well.
If it seems like too much for you, then 5 1/4 speakers should be almost a direct plug and play.
