Backup camera intermittent

I have done a little more research into this problem. I am still having the issue where my camera either:
1. works fine
2. gray screen
3. colors washed out and wrong
4. shaking image
5. does not work at all

When the camera does not work at all, I go into the service mode and it is not listed. It's like the computer did not recognize it on boot up.

When the camera is working, I can enter service mode and see it there.

I have a switch installed so I can see the reverse camera all the time. When the camera is not working, the switch will not cause it to work or show up in service mode. When the camera works, the switch functions fine to bring up the image and switch back to GPS screen. I had the issue before I installed the switch.

I am thinking that if the software does not see the camera when booting due to a bad connection or camera, then it will not work until the car is restarted and the camera is found.

Mine seems to be getting worse, I only have the camera about 15% of the time now.

Good info... I am really clueless what to try to do to diagnose it. It just stopped one day switching to camera when put in reverse, and as someone else mentioned it could be a faulty switch but I'm not sure I'm knowledgable enough to fix that!

So I have only had my 4Runner a few weeks and I have had this issue twice where the backup camera is greyed out and then after restarting the car the system reboots, here is a video any help?!? https://youtu.be/MG3HYnCok-Y
After 15 minutes or so the camera works again

I've never had this issue 'being discussed here', but I have had the navi-cam completely fail at one time (maybe two yrs ago). I shut the truck off, restarted it and it hasn't happened again since; which I suspect was the shifter's reverse switch making poor contact... that's not software, but hardware. I would've suggested that you check the rev switch by checking for 12V at the #2 terminal @the HU REV TERM, but I know for most of you, that's not it at all! But I think I'll leave these wiring diagrams for the 2014 4Runner limited here (also represents SR5 and Trail) so you'll have more to work with; it's really hard to work with limited info!

The circuit begins at the IG1 (Ignition) relay 30A ECU fuse. The current makes two passes through three junctions and one 'Parking-Neutral position' switch and then on to the #2 REV TERM at the HU. This initializes reverse camera operation! PS: I would STRONGLY urge you to check that you are using the latest Entune update 5.1 as the 3.2 firmware is no longer supported... "See the update thread link": http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/206008-new-version-entune-available.html "...and here's the 5.1 download link": https://securedp.toyota.com/download-app/toyotaHeadUnits

I really wish that I could be of more help but I have yet to be faced with this, yet another 'Entune' glitch... Knock-on-wood! Best to you!

EDIT: ...I'll run my rev camera in 'Diagnostic mode' tomorrow and let you all know what happens, Cheers!

Thanks for the reply rigtec. One thing I'm not sure of is if mine is entune. Mine is the 7inch JBL, thought entune was 6" touch with nav. Would love to update the firmware, but not sure it is the same radio

Hi chetweewax,

Entune isn't noted by the size of the touch-screen e.g., 6" or 7"... That's just hardware. Entune is Toyota's operating system that drives the hardware be it 'JBL, or Panasonic' (my hu is from Panasonic). I believe that the 2010 4Runners used a different operating system; entune was still in development stage, but in 2011 we all got handed Entune

Best!

Took this picture of the original sticker, says no entune. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1444781283.255725.jpg

Hi chetweewax,

Yeah, I see what the sticker says; never seen that before! Can you post a picture of the HU... would be helpful for identifying it. Rgds

Pretty good view of it in the video I posted earlier. Is there anywhere specific to get a pic of, i.e. Model info or anything

No need for pics, I just saw the video. That looks like a conventional JBL HU w/Entune... If it's not driven by the Entune system then perhaps it is w/o the hard-drive/processor; which is a separate piece of equipment that's mounted on the underside of the headunit; at least it is on my Harman/Panasonic. I'm thinking that if that's the issue then the Entune system could be added with the installation of the processor. I'm wondering if Antman has ever seen a conventional, 5'th gen JBL hu that's not driven by Entune...

Cheers

I don't have Entune on mine...

Just an update. I pull the head unit out, since it looked so easy to do, based on someone's write up on here. 5 minutes and the head unit was hanging out. All wiring connections looked secure, pulled each connection individually and check for any signs of problems and nothing, put it all back together and so far I have not had the issue again. Fingers crossed it was something loose, only time will tell.

Hey guys! Checking in that I'm having this problem now to on my 2011 TE. I think I saw another TE (2012 if I recall) on page 1 with this issue. We both have the mini screen in the rear view mirror, no navigation screen.

Mine has done all of the following at some point in the last few days:

 • Grey screen with lines
 • Blue Screen
 • No Screen

Coincidentally, this seems to have started when it got cold here.

Also of note, I've had my rear window replaced. It was a bear for the Safelite guy to get that piece of glass in, so I'm wondering if he knocked something loose? Or maybe something's just come loose over time?

Update: dealer can not duplicate the issue, but I emailed my videos of the problem every time it happened (I have like 40 videos of the same issue). And I think it annoyed them as much as it annoys me, because they are going to replace the head unit, thankfully I bought a Zurich warranty because the head unit is $2700.

Sorry to bump such an old thread, but this thread was the one that most resembled my problem when I was searching. I have yet to see a thread/post that exactly matches my issues.

Some days my camera works fine, and other days it just gives me a blue screen. The little guide lines show up over the top of the blue for about 3 seconds and then the entire display disappears (I don't have navi, this is in the rearview mirror.)

I have noticed that it seems to act up more frequently after a rain, even though this isn't a 100% correlation, and I don't feel comfortable actually attributing it to a moisture issue quite yet.

Also, when it acts up, it will do it for a day or even days at a time. This isn't an issue that comes and goes frequently. It will work for 2 or 3 days, then quit for a day or two, and then work again.

I'm hoping somebody has some little bit of info that might help me. It seems that the reverse sensor is working, because the display is always activated. I would think it's more of a signal issue from the camera. If it is indeed a moisture issue, I'm hoping someone can suggest me a likely water infiltration point I could check.

This is a 2013 SR5, and I've only had it for a couple weeks now.

Same. My 2011 limited having similar issues. Not sure if it's head unit or actual camera dieing... Sometimes no connection... Other times it's like stuck on night mode or a black screen... I have the anytime camera kit and it doesn't even activate backup system when the camera isn't working... Usually a quick restart fixes it.. but I'd rather not start and stop the truck multiple times to get the rear camera to kick in
.. I'll probably tear it open next week to see if anything loose from the head unit

Backup camera intermittent-solution?

I have a 2012 LE and over the last few months our backup camera is intermittent. A few weeks of working, a few days/weeks of it not working. The NAV screen just stays on whatever it was on before.

I opened the rear hatch and opened and closed a few times with no success. Then I opened the rear hatch and just moved the 2 sets of wiring bundles around (not sure which one is connected to the camera). I closed hatch again and now camera is working fine.

Could be coincidence so I'll keep an eye on it (wife's car) and next time it goes out I told her to do the same thing. I'll post if it happens again and this fixes it.

Sooooo, the million $ question for me is if it IS the wiring in those bundles (which one??), what do I do?

Same issue, intermittent use of backup camera. HU doesn't act like it's receiving he reverse signal as the screen doesn't change from what it is on. Will work one day then not for a few. Following hoping to find an answer. 2011 limited

Same issue here, 2011 Trail w/JBL. Yesterday I got a floating grey screen, camera returned after ignition restart. Today, nothing.

Seems like it's a bad connection or switch...otherwise we wouldn't be seeing it on both the mirror and nav cams.

I had intermittent camera too, it would work, it would not work, sometimes it would flicker or be black and white. Took it in, they replaced the camera under warranty, no issues since, other than the sh!tty work the dealer did. Among scratching the tailgate where they used a screw driver to pull the trim of (ever heard of trim tools?) I checked their work, they did not replace the non-reusable moisture barrier and did not use new mastic to attach the old one, in fact they didn’t make sure it was sealed all the way around. Crap work as expected. Anyway rant over.

I recall reading a warning somewhere in the manual not to hit the backup camera with high pressure water, which I am pretty sure I had done quite a few times.
