I went through this (cat replacement) last month,ended up going to Pep Boys. They always have discounts for online orders (which I then opt for store pickup), they currently have one for 35% off. The code is "35forall". It may come out cheaper than Rock Auto after shipping costs.

There is one additional gasket they don't sell,part 31374. I bought it an an AutoZone or Advanced Auto Parts,practically any parts store carries Walker so just ask for that part number.

If you can weld,they also sell the 93271 and 93252 universal converters. It'll save you a decent chunk of change over the direct bolt-ins.

Ed, when you changed out your CATs, did you go from one connecting pipe to two? Is that why you needed the extra gasket? I only ask because my current set up is just one long pipe from the exhaust manifold all the way back to after the second CAT. Is that what you had? I just want to make sure I'm buying the right parts.

My originals were two separate assemblies bolted together like the Walker ones. It looks like yours was originally built for/sold in California and needs the CARB (California Air Research Board)-compliant cats. Walker doesn't have a direct bolt-on setup, only weld-on CARB cats.

Thanks for the info, I've contacted Walker about which CATS I need. I entered my VIN and it did state I need the universal ones which will require welding, so the CATs should be less expensive, but more to install.

I hate to bring up this post, but started to order my two CATs when I took a look under the truck and don't think I have two. I've included some pics of what maybe a CAT, then a pic of what I know is a CAT, then a pic of my emissions sticker under the hood.

Can someone tell me how many CATs I have and if I have a Cali truck or not?

That first one is an aftermarket cat, I'm pretty sure. I think all 4Runners built after a certain year (99?, certainly '01 though) have two cats.

FYI, when I ordered my parts from Rockauto, they came in all bashed up and un-useable. That being said, they gave me a refund no questions asked and I sent them back. I wound up buying mine from a place in MN that re-certifies used cats. Something like 15k miles and no problems... yet.

Just to be clear...there are THREE types of after-market Cats.

a) CARB compliant Cali. type cats for two-cat system.
b) non-CARB compliant Cali. type cats for two-cat system.
c) 49-state/Federal cats for one-cat system.

This is because Kalifornia requires each aftermarket piece to be CARB-certified as compliant if it is used or sold in Kali. Some manufacturers make replacement cats for the Cali. type systems (used in all 4Runners in 2001 and 2002 and in many northeast states and a few others in 1999 and 2000) but do not obtain the CARB-certification. Folks who live outside California can use these cats on their trucks with Cali. type two-cat systems.

Don't use CARB-compliant as a synonym for Cali. type or two-cat system.

You have a Cali type truck made in 2001 when the Feds adopted the former Cali. system in all 50 states. See on the label in the top left where it says A/F S, TWC(2), HO2S? That means air/fuel sensor, two Three Way Cats, Heated Oxygen Sensor.

Durk, thanks for the help. All this Cali/non-Cali/CARB compliant stuff is really starting to confuse me. I just want to purchase a less expensive, non-OEM Cat replacement that will be correct and clear my CEL. I emailed Walker tech line and gave them my VIN and this is there response:

"Thank you for your inquiry for Walker Exhaust. We appreciate your interest in our products. It will be your preference. The direct fit will bolt in with no modifications. The universal will require the old converter to be cut out of the pipe and the universal converter to be fabricated into its place in the pipes."

So this tells me that I SHOULD be able to buy the direct bolt-on replacements, bolt is all together and it should clear my CEL and be a direct bolt-on replacement even though my current setup is actually one long pipe vice two like the Walker replacement.

Does that sound like it makes sense?

Thing is, I don't know what violence your PO has done to your truck and if they cut up beyond the cats at the muffler connection. If the muffler is factory you are fine using either one of these above. If it is aftermarket or a Toyota 49-state/Federal type you may have a problem. But any muffler shop should be able to resolve it. I doubt they messed with the manifold so you should bolt up fine at that end.

Thanks for the help and info, I really appreciate it. I pulled the string and bought the Eastern front and rear that are not legal in Cali, I live in FL and don't ever plan on living there. I just hope my CEL clears after installation, I'll make sure to post what I find so maybe it'll help someone else down the line.

Nelson is no longer in a 4Runner, he lost the battle with rust but from what I remember is Cat was fine.
