Best time to ditch Dunlops?

How are the BFG's in terms of road noise at highway speeds? That's my only concern, just wondering how they compare to the Dunlops currently on my 4-Runner.

That's the reason that I want to avoid AT tires. Like you, I'm not too concerned with off-road performance. I just want a decent street tire that is quiet and comfortable, yet offers excellent snow traction.

A tire that performs well in the snow is a must-have, but I also want one with a stiffer sidewall for better on-road handling, as well as a tire that looks good, rides well, and isn't loud. Would also like to have a tire that wears well and will last 40,000+ miles with good traction remaining.

I definitely agree with that. I drove my Explorer ragged while in college, and the BFGs took a lot of abuse along the way (curbs, nails, etc.). I went to college in Atlanta and interned in Orlando for a while, so I racked up the miles quick. The BFGs were slightly used on the Explorer when I got it, and now 4 years later my brother has it and the tires appear to still have a lot of life left in them.

I should also say that although they did make noise, it was because of a suspension or alignment problem that caused channeling in the tires (I hope that's the correct term).
