Just ordered about $50 in new bolts from the local Toyota dealer. If it was rusty or didn't come clean with a tooth brush I ordered a new one as I'm working through some disassembly now.
Also, got the trans fluid changed out and used some Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF I got on clearance at the local auto store. Was gonna use the Valvoline MaxLife but this Mobil 1 is what I put in 15 years and 100K miles ago and surprisingly it didn't look too bad and it was like $6 a quart. Win win.
Power steering is all that's left from a "fluids" perspective.

Heck even a wire wheel on a drill or drill press works great. I cleaned up some lightly rusted junkyard cam bolts that way and they came out great.

Yeah if it's zinc plated hardware probably better to play it safe.

Does that stuff remove the zinc coating? Or maybe if they're rusting the zinc's already gone?

Another option, if you can do a lot of bolts at once, is to clean them up then take them in for plating. Then you'll know they are still OEM. Just be sure to mark each bolt well before taking them in - many bolts are nearly identical but vary by just one thread length.

It will leave paint on cleans aluminum and steel.
I believe the zinc coating is gone. Hence why it's rusting. :]

I wonder if you can plate the bolts yourself. As nobody around here that I know of plates bolts.

That's a good idea and one I didn't consider. I'm setup as a "shop" at my local dealer so luckily all the bolts I picked up were only like $37 and I probably got 35 bolts give or take so not too bad. I'll have to see if I can find a place around here that does that sorta thing.
And you sound a lot like me, I want original bolts in original locations. No idea why, just makes me feel better. I have lots of zip lock labeled baggies ready to go lol.

And yes you can plate your own bolts. I looked into it...
Just FYI. You can't buy all the bolts. Some have been discontinued.

Life would be easier for me if I didn't obsess over things like bolts. I've spent several hours with simple green and a toothbrush not to mention going blind looking at diagrams and cross references to superseded part numbers :der:

That's the one downside of taking them in for plating, you can't put the bolts in baggies or otherwise identify them. You'll have to rely on photos you take.
I took tons of photos, but I wish I took more. So many of the bolts are nearly identical with a difference of just one thread; some have plain ends while some have those semi-cutting threads; some have flange heads, while others have either washers, lockwashers, or both. I spent way too much time at reassembly looking at my photos and counting threads, then doing the same on the bolts.
On the other hand, I am also obsessive about OEM bolts, and if you are truly obsessive, then it'll bother you that they originally came in yellow zinc but any replacements you buy now will be in clear zinc. Not to mention that yellow zinc has better anti corrosion properties.

Lol you should start a car war that just sprays Fluid Film as an undercarriage wash....Sounds like it would be a hit in the rust belt even if it means some of it get's on the body.
