Bike Rack?

So I guess this will be my first ever "mod"! So after going off roading a few times in my month old '13, I think I need a bike rack! It needs to hold 4 bikes, so which ones would you guys recommend? Links/pictures would be highly appreciated!

Yakima Holdup is the way to go. It is a finely engineered piece of equipment. Pricey, but well worth it if you want your bikes to be secure regardless of their size and style. I carry a 29er, woman's cruiser, and a 20-inch boys bike perfectly with room left over for a friend's rig.

I also have 2 x Yakima roof racks so I can carry bikes will towing my camper.

+2 on the Holdup. Used mine yesterday and today after buying on sale at REI last week.

Did a bunch of research and that was the clear winner--other than the pricey 1UpUSA stuff. My buddy has a 1Up and it's sick.

whatever you choose, buy a platform type rack.

2nd the North Shore Rack if bulk isn't a concern.

You can't go wrong with Kuat, 1upUSA, Thule or Yakima. In order of my personal preference.

Try checking craigslist for the bike rack, always got deals and in pretty good shape. Most peeps don't run the bike racks hard.......

ive had all kinds of bike racks over the years and the platform racks are my favorite. The wife and I have lots of bikes with different frame types and wheel sizes and the platform racks hold them all.
The Kuat NV is awesome but pricey at $540. If I were going to buy a new rack today that is what I would get. I currently run the Thule T2 and its great. They show up on craigslist all the time for $200-300. Here a pic of mine folded up.

I've owned most of the platform-type bike racks. To include:

The Thule T2
A 1upusa
Kuat NV

My favorite of the 3 is the Kuat NV. It's all aluminum and VERY nicely made. Solid. It's the easiest of the 3 to install with an expanding wedge.

My 2nd fave is the old Thule T2. It was rock solid, and I actually still own it. It was super heavy, and a pain to install/remove. Otherwise, it's great. I would buy one again.

Contrary to what most people will say, I owned but didn't like the 1upusa rack. I returned it. Yes, it was all aluminum and very trick (it folds into a tiny little package). But, I thought it was wiggly and alarmingly bouncy on the back of the 4runner. There was a lot of movement back there. Plus, I didn't really like the way the arms came down over the front and rear tire. It just didn't seem very secure. I like the hook-type arms (thule, kyat) much better.

Buy a Kuat NV or Thule T2 platform rack. Either will do you fine.

If you're a "pay retail" kind of guy, Kuat is the way to go for sure.

If you're more like me, you'll comb craigslist and wait for gently used tray carrier from Kuat, Yakima, or Thule whatever happens to come your way. They are all very comparable.

I have both a tray system that is a rear hitch type as well as a roof rack style. Both have their benefits.

Both suck for certain reasons too. Rear end collisions, and parking lot mishaps are no-goes for hitch style. And low hanging limbs wreak havoc on the roof rack. Pick your poison.

Plat form racks are great and my preferred method for carrying 2 bikes. When carrying 4 I put two on a Thule T2 and two on the roof using Thule Circuit 526. The roof rails mount directly to the factory crossbars. 10+ years in the bike bizz has resulted in a garage full of carbon fiber mountain and road bikes and I will not use a rack that allows the bikes to hit each other or my TE. Good luck.

FWIW, one of the main reasons I bought a Yak Holdup over the T2 is the way they come out of the hitch. The Yak has way better clearance/departure angle. Bunch of reviews complain about dragging the T2 on FS roads.

I sold both brands for years and have Thule stuff on my other car, so no particular "allegiance" or anything.
