Biker Gang Incident

Believe it or not, I'm completely aware of this

Apparently not. "Intimidation" does not equate to deadly force. "Intimidation" only works in Hollywood and is the course of action of someone without a whole ton of common sense.

Yeah, it may end up getting someone to leave you alone, but eventually, you're going to draw that weapon with the intent to "intimidate" someone and will end up escalating the situation, needlessly.

Not to mention the fact that there are people on this planet who won't be intimidated. Ever. That's another kind of problem, entirely, and one which nobody wants.

I agree with you, for one, I view this as an extreme case, a gang of bikers going after 3 people in a range rover isn't something I'll likely ever be a part of, if it escalated to the point it did, I presented the gun as an option, not the end all be all. And lastly, I don't own a handgun. I own a shotgun used solely for bird hunting, had it since I was 12 years old, and its locked in a safe in my basement 360 days out of the year

If I were in this guy's shoes, I would have done everything to keep moving. You have to realize immediately that you can't outrun them. Driving fast won't do anything, but don't stop. Keep moving until you attract police attention or whatever it takes to keep yourself out of danger.

I'm not trying to make this a gun issue at all, but I'm curious: What do you do if you're CC'ing? Your wife and child are in the car, someone is busting your driver window out and trying to pull you out of your vehicle, plus they've got a huge number advantage. Obviously, no one wants to turn a bad situation into a potential gunfight (I'm willing to bet at least one of the bikers was strapped). But if someone was endangering my family and I was carrying, I would drop them.

This happened in NYC. No one had any guns because handguns are outlawed. :noidea:

I like the bear spray I keep for hiking that I've never used ! Kinda hard to swing that slugger front seat of a Range Rover behind steering wheel .Good ad for them tho instead of Pikes Peak one . :violin:

I agree, I would have kept moving. But yeah if I was stuck, the dude swinging the helmet would not have had a good day. That kind of leaves you no choice. But then again this is NYC so no one is armed. I'm sure there's a law somewhere about not using your helmet as a weapon.

Those rear windows were pretty strong though. hah

This adds some more perspective to what likely happened, from someone that lives and works in the area:

I made sure to post this on the support site as well. As a trucker that would deliver in north jersey and New York I am familiar with these gangs. I can hopefully clarify a few things. First the initial "accident" is part of a game they play. They ride in a huge group and will operate together to slow down traffic. Next they pick out high end vehicles targeting people with families in them, the targets will usually be white or Asian. Then one of the riders will do a "brake check" and stop suddenly in front of the target vehicle causing a minor bump. In some cases they will just roll back into their target vehicle. They will then mob the vehicle demanding money and or begin attacking the person inside. It is their practice to also slash the tires to prevent the vehicle from escaping. Truckers are well aware of them and are advised not to stop. You can clearly see in the video how they are well practiced in this style of attack. The police in NY have backed off them after an officer ran one down using his vehicle a few months back. The video was all over the net so I advise you to check it out. These "bikers" ride dirt bikes and sport bikes very few of which are street legal and even fewer have plates. They run red lights, stop signs, and have no regard for the law. If you are ever in this situation do not stop, immediately call the police and do whatever you have to to keep them from boxing you in. NEVER leave the scene of an accident if you are not under direct threat!!! Only run if you have no other choice, and again immediately call the police. This is not rare by any means, the only reason this incident got any attention is because of the helmet cam video being posted on the net. If you see anyone in this situation, call the police. Make no mistake confusing these punks with true bikers. You will rarely if ever see a member of these gangs on a Harley. Do not for a minute blame true bikers for this kind of behavior. Bikers like those involved in the 2 million Bikers to DC Rally are American Patriots and would be among the first to come to your aid. A final note, always be aware of motorcycles and share the road. Check your mirrors and don't ride anyone's bumper, motorcycles have a much smaller profile then a car and are harder to see."

Sounds like their favorite tactic is to harass 'soft targets' in their eyes, shake them down for the "accident" the punks cause, and leave the vehicle disabled with slashed tires and terrorized occupants, while they make their getaway.

If all that proves to be the case here, the RR driver did nothing wrong, and was simply trying to get his family away from danger.

As for the idiot that put himself in harms way and is now apparently paralyzed; Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

I used to be an avid rider, and still am in a way (Just don't have the time or money right now). I used to ride on the street, and have since given it up and moved my sport bike to the track. I may one day buy a cruiser of some sort in order to ride on the street, but I came to the conclusion that riding on the street is not as fun as the track and is much riskier. Being a motorcycle enthusiast I do not condone anything those dumbasses did on their motorcycles.

People like that are what I call squids and show-offs. The type of rider who only does it to look cool, and get people to look at them. They're basically like women (no offense). They get on their motorcycles and dress up the way they do like a fashion show (entirely nothing wrong with this, it's just a lifestyle I find no interest in), and roam around revving their engines. I always questioned what happened to riding for the passion of being on two wheels and the exhilaration it gives you. These people are the types that think because they're on a motorcycle in a big group means they get special privileges, and these stupid "cagers" should just get out of their way. They think cagers are so dumb because they don't understand their lifestyle, and how much they risk their lives out on the streets for their hobby.

Granted this is a giant generalization, but it's how I feel about it. I see nothing wrong in anything the guy in the Range Rover did, those bikers had what was coming to them. I would have done the same thing had I felt as threatened as he did.

On a side note I would like to put my two cents in on the gun comments. Granted this is NYC and you can't carry, but had this event occurred anywhere else other than NYC or Chicago, and I had been carrying, I absolutely do not believe in using a firearm for intimidation purposes. The only time you should be pulling a handgun on somebody is when you intend to use it in a deadly force situation. In this case, if someone were up to my window bashing it in while I had my kids in the car I believe I would have been able to articulate the use of deadly force in that situation. The fact that this group was following me, harassing me, and then suddenly started attacking me in my vehicle in an aggressive manner would make me "fear for my life". I think any jury would be able to understand why someone would use deadly force in that situation and see it as justifiable. Just something to think about.

I would never wish anyone to get seriously hurt in a situation, but I think there's a level of risk you are taking when behaving like this. Which in my opinion is like complete jacka$$es. I don't know if the guy was tending to a fallen biker, but I do have my doubts. Unless someone is seriously injured, the first thing you'd do in that situation is get them out of the MIDDLE of the highway.

As someone who's lived in NYC and driven on the Westside highway plenty of times, let me tell you that there is an insane number of reckless motorcycle drivers who frequent it. Whoever is in the right or wrong with the original accident, it doesn't give the right to the masses to take the law into their own hands. If you choose to put your bike in the path of a MUCH larger vehicle, be prepared to handle the repercussions.

For what it's worth, I also used to ride motorcycles in the past, but did give it up as I felt there were too many careless drivers on the roads and I didn't feel the odds weight-wise were in my favor.

As an avid motorcyclist with nearly 100k street bike miles down, I'd like to say screw those guys.

The how of why this altercation occurred is largely irrelevant too.

Be a responsible adult and know actions have consequences. End of story.

The ONLY problem I see with this entire situation is that the driver of the Range Rover failed to hit ALL of them. I would love to comment more on this but I would probably get band from this site. I have 1st hand knowledge and have been witness to this kind of crap (more then once.) Good for the Range Rover for not breaking down after the initial accident too (some humor there and as a prior RR owner I'm allowed.). The rest of those asshats are lucky they weren't struck and run over, it's all fun and games until someone gets hit by a 6 thousand lb suv, oh well Darwinism at its finest.

And yes I have Been the owner of several motorcycles, and these guys ruin it for everyone else.

I took another look at this today. I noticed many of them did, in fact, have their license plates removed (shows intent IMO) and they seem very well-rehearsed. These guys were definitely looking for trouble. Also, I think the guy in the RR actually showed a lot of restraint considering the intense circumstances. He could have really F***ed some people up once they started to pursue him at high speed. I would have been nothing for him to smash several of those guys into that concrete barrier or brake-check/ back over a few. I hope he doesn't in trouble for protecting his family....but this is NY, so you never know.

Yea, I'm worried this guy might somehow wind up in trouble. Our country is so backwards right now and I'm not sure if it will get better or not. I've already read several articles about this event, and many news sources try to paint the run over cyclist in a good light, supposedly "helping up his friend." Even if that were true, I don't have much sympathy if you were truly a victim that chose to hang out with people who do ridiculously stupid things as shown in the video.

They were slashing his tires. The guy that got run over could be the awesomest good samaritan in the world, and you still couldn't hold the RR driver responsible.

If you're in the same situation as the SUV driver and you actually have a firearm and use it, I think it would be easy to articulate, later on, that you feared for your life: who wouldn't when you're outnumbered and someone is breaking in your window?
