No, it was more - 4 or 5 off-duty cops were there that we know about. Still wondering where the on-duty cops were and why they didn't show up for half an hour.

It's kind of baffling how someone can honestly consider that as only "attempted" assault just because the guy didn't end up being beat up as badly as it looked.
Not that I am saying material things matter at all in this situation...but look at the condition of the ranger rover after the incident, does that look like just an attempt at assault? Not to mention the video evidence.
It sure doesn't look like they were just trying to get the guy's attention and exchange driver's license and insurance information.
It's this kind of crap that sets the legal precedent which empowers future mob mentality. I mean basically we just got to make sure not to really really beat the guy up right? :tsk:

It's likely the fed's looking a bit further into things than just the assault in and of itself. Someone got cut a plea-deal while the family/driver are getting a check cut to cover their side.
It's the old play on "What do you want to risk possibly gaining or losing if we prosecute these guys versus this check for "X-Large-$$$$$$"?
Most people will shy away from things and take the check while the criminal gets the bargain.
Is it right, who's to say. It is, however sad, how our justice system tends to work in situations like this.

Yeah the charge doesn't correspond to the actions, but I think that's more that they just wanted a lesser charge to apply and went with "attempted" assault, despite the name.
I agree with [MENTION=68260]NorCalBorn[/MENTION] something else is going on, plea deal of some sort, maybe a civil settlement (i know if I were that guy i'd sue the crap out of them civilly)

Turns out one of the gang members was a cop and they are going to trial.
What a disgrace to LEOs (who just like soldiers have a few bad apples) everywhere.
I do wonder though if the fact that cops were on the scene and apparently involved in the crime explains why in a city with over 35,000 cops, not a single cop intervened despite 200+ 911 calls and over 20 minutes of biker violence across the city.
I'm not saying the department is in on it but something is up. How is it that not a single cop made it to the scene despite the 200+ 911 calls and multiple freeways crossed in broad daylight?
This is post 911 NY where the police are armed and funded more than the militaries of most small countries.
