Blacking out FJ Wheels (Lots of Pics)

and a little update on these rims, they got beat up in big bear when I was playing in the rocks, I actually had to touch up all 4 wheels and there were some BAD gouges and scratches. I think if I had powdercoated the rims, one of the wheels wouldn't have needed to be touched up, but the other 3 I would have had much more difficulty in doing.
These have been great and IMHO now I am very happy I did rattle can rather than powdercoating.

hey man looks great. im thinking about doing this to my wheels but a gun metal grey color to match the cladding. anyways. what should i do about the wheel weights that balance my wheels? i dont want to have to pay to get them re balanced but i might have to. and if i do take off the weights and paint em, when i take em to re balanced does it cose extra for the weights that go inside the wheel instead of on the lip? i dont want them to mess up the paint. i just figured you might kno cause i dont see wheel weights on yours. thanks

These style wheels as well as my factory sport wheels require the wheel weights to be on the inside, so I never had to deal with painting over visible ones.
I painted most of the wheels with no tires on them so I just stripped off all the wheel weights and had them mounted and balanced with new tires. I have since upgraded tires and had new weights put on with no issues.

Take the weights off and then paint them. Pay to have them rebalanced using "hammer on" weights on the inside lip and "stick on" weights behind the spokes. For a few dollars more, you can usually get a lifetime balance so it would be 'free' in the future to rebalance.

okay that sounds pretty good. i think im going to attempt this sometime this week. i have the stock steelies and the paint is already coming off so i dont think they could look any worse haha. also i might just paint over the weights then when i get new tires in a few months have them balance with the weights inside and re paint. thanks for the help guys

I like the looks of your wheels......would like to find a set or do my chrome ones and do them possibly gray or a color that would look good with my "silver" truck. How do you think the painted rims will hold up when you get the tires changed?

i just got back from wal mart and they dont even carry dupli color spray paint. not getting any off brand bs. where to buy dupli color? i know Lowes doesnt have it either. and i might end up doing it right before i get new tires installed in a month so i can take of the weights paint em and then the next day take a short wobbly drive and get tires mounted with wheel weights inside the rims. ha

ahh i missed that my bad. yea i was looking a rustoleum grey primer. is the rustoleum that you used just called satin black or was it a special black like say automotive or something like that? i want a dark grey but dont know what would be best. ill look when i stop back by. thanks

It was not automotive. I feel it was a paint made for outdoors, but I am not honestly sure. I will check it out when I get home from work today since I still have a can or two left.

I followed Blairb's as well when I blacked out mines. I used Rustoleum Satin Black as well. I can take a pic of the one I used..I still got one at home..I am missing the fifth rim to paint still...kinda messed up that one and had to re-do the sanding and priming. I paid about $8 for a can If I am not mistaken. I didn't want to go with the cheap stuff

I went w/ a flat powdercoat. If i could do it again, I would have gone w/ a satin or w/ the rattle can. Dirt sticks to the flat black like glue. It may be because they are more pourous than a shinier finish. When I wash the car I have to really scrub the powdercoat...the dirt is very difficult to get off. I have to actually use a scrub pad and wd40. If the problem persists or gets worse I might sand them down and give em a dose of rattle can. I'm really not pleased w/ the powdercoat. They look great when clean but the maintenance is extremely time consuming. I have to wash them as soon as the get dirty. If i let it go for too long the wheels become very spotty...nice brown stains!

awesome look. i just got my fj rims on last week. unfortunately dont have the time to paint all mine. but i was thinking of plasti-dipping the emblems on them for a little contrast. do the emblems pop right off the centercaps?
