doodman, can you confirm how you removed the roof rails? i think i missed it in the thread. was it just like you said; pop off the end caps and unbolt the rails? i have got to do this as my first mod. tx.

I took mine off... looks better!
Funny, nothing left to do on my bikes so I'm starting on the 4runner, namely plastidip.
I was also looking at the roof rails an hour ago, wondering how they come off.
...I believe I read people have plastidip the rear emblems by just spraying it on, then peeling off the paint, anyone confirm?
Front emblem is easy, I guess I'll just get stuff off that is progressively harder.

Blacking out Chrome
As a lot have posted as well I am not a huge chrome fan. Starting painting these last week. Going to go ahead and paint the end caps on the roof rails tomorrow. Can't quite get the feel for the two tone. Anyway its been done many times on here but wanted to share my pics.

After reading this thread, I have two questions:
1) I am torn between the Krylon Fusion and the Plastidip, but leaning more towards the latter. What are you guys liking better?
2) With the front grill, if I want to entirely black it out (chrome strip and emblem) does this involve removing the piece? If this is the case, how difficult is it?

Probably easiest to leave the chrome strip on and plasti dip. For the chrome emblem on the grill it is also easiest to leave it on the vehicle but you will want to mask off the honeycomb portion of the grill and behind the emblem as you would not want to plasti-dip the radiator. I would take off the pieces and plasti dip them individually.
I have removed the entire front grill and it is not that bad. I made a write up when I swapped the headlights and grill and bezels for trail versions.

Plasti-dip = non permanent, removable, forgiving if you make a mistake (run,drip, overspray)
Fusion = permanent, more durable but you would have to sand down to fix a mistake.
I would have like to just permanently paint mine but my painting skills are not up to my own standards.

I did the Fusion and like the look better. It still has a chrome effect but black. If you put too much, the chrome pretty much turns completely black so a little trial and error involved.
I don't think it's all that durable though. I probably should have done more surface prep. I just cleaned with alcohol cause I didn't want to roughen the surface and lose the chrome. I put a couple of coats of clear over the Fusion. The surface is hard and durable but it does not adhere that well to the chrome. I "gently" bumped the lift gate on my garage entry and it cracked off in several places. I'm pretty lazy about fixing things. I like doing it the first time but not the corrections. This weekend I'm just going to spray some Fusion into the cap and use a small brush to touch it up. Then I guess I'll do the same with some clear coat.

In the garage right now plasti dipping the chrome handles and skirt on the limited.
I've posted a pic of my first coat below, is it too thick a layer for 1 pass?

I'm thinking it's a bit on the heavy side so I'll make the next ones lighter, but it's always nice to have some reference points.

Finished up around midnight last night
I decided to do 7 light coats on the handles and side skirts, which is in contrast to the 10 coats I put on the front and rear chrome. 7 light coats gives it more of a satin look up close/ matte look from far, while 10 coats makes it look like rough rubber from both near and far.
Pardon the shotty pics, which reminds me to order a new memory card for the DSLR today
Hmmm, should I do the wheels now too?
