Body mounts: too much weight?

I was undercoating the truck yesterday. I went to lower the hi-jack and noticed the body bouncing a little bit as it went down. There is a bit of up and down movement in the rear body mounts.

I haul 1000 lbs of pellets a few times a year. Truck is assisted with air bags. Would this weight be the cause of my worn body mounts?

Has anyone had worn body mounts? I don't think it is a common issue.

The body mount bushings do wear out. I don’t think it’s as uncommon as you think. Plus, your 3rd gen is ~20 years old, and all that weight probably sped up the wearing out.

For the 4th gen, when people install a body lift kit, they often replace the front body mounts because the engine weight wears them out faster than the other body mounts. Some replace all of them when they have the body lifted off the frame. Mine looked ok, so I didn’t replace any of the body mounts.

There are threads on this forum about body lifts that talk about replacing the rubber(?) mounts/bushings.

Thanks for replying. I have been looking for replacement body mounts but seems to be difficult to find. I don't want a complete poly kit that costs $200 nor any junkyard mounts. I went through the dealer parts site but pages of pages of mounts. My phone doesn't bring up the diagrams for some reason.

If anyone knows where to purchase factory mounts please share otherwise I will keep looking.

I've worn out stock rear mounts on a 99 I had 6 years ago, had about 300K, it was bad enough it would bang hitting big bumps. You can replace just the rear mounts if you want, that's what I did.
My current 99 I have Energy Suspension (urethane) body mounts and a 1 inch body lift.

the rear mounts do last a good long time 20 years of service is pretty respectable.

I have replaced 2x 3rd gens now with body mounts. I can share my experience.

replaced all mounts on a 2000 lim with OEM mounts yes this was expensive but you can purchase only the mounts if your hardware is in ok condition.

I would suggest this site, use them all the time. they are great, shipping on smaller items makes it doable.

yes some have upper and lower bushings. so 18 sounds correct.

It's not free that is for sure. I had similar sticker shock last year when I did it.

these trucks are old so... you will have to mix and match if your hell bent on OEM. with a combo of Partsouq, Amazon, toyota parts deal, McGeorge Toyota in VA and my local place I can usually find it. your lucky you live in a place where pick'n pull have non rusty parts. anything going to pick'n pull here in the salt belt is so rusted now it's almost always worthless.

make sure you get the correct set, I have 2 trucks a 2000 and 1997, that set is for a 1997. ES makes different sets.

I have both OEM and poly so I can tell you what I think the difference is.

OEM is a quiet ride and very nice, exactly what you would expect. no surprise here.

poly is firm but not bad, just firm and you get more feedback. not harsh but you can feel more.

my only complaint with poly is when it gets cold (I live in frozen northland) the poly is really harsh. it's like riding on a board. the rubber mounts are harder in the same cold weather but the poly is noticeably harsher. This is only when the temp gets down below 20' F and that might not be a concern being from a warm climate?

I just did the rear body mounts in my 99 LTD 173,000mi using Sonoran Steel poly mount for the rear, and it made a huge difference, the old bushings where ripped and clunking over bumps, I have been undercoating and loading my truck up with wood pellets aswell, nothing crazy maybe 20-25 bags a few times a year for the shop, but I'm sure the oil undercoating has killed almost every rubber bushing in my truck, doing LCA bushings now. try just doing the rears, if you remove the rear tires you can reach the rear body mount bolts between the frame and body, these can be a bugger, I used a oxy torch to heat the weld on nuts, and slipped an exhaust pipe over the bushing so I wouldn't burn it while I heated them up, no way would they come out without heat, I soaked them for months to no avail.

the 97 uses the non bolted one, from top to bottom

I'm 100% sure about this mount because I had to deal with this one on my last go around.

if you look @ the same diagram for a 2000 you will see the updated parts. I don't know why they show the parts for a different VIN but restrict the parts to your VIN, they just do it that way. it's stupid and confusing.

One question about the bolt for the #2 mount: you linked 52217-35100. However, in your link it's -35110. And when I search by my VIN, it tells me it's -35050. Should I just assume it's the last one since that's what my VIN brings up, or is there a specific reason you believe it's -35100?

So I had assumed that I should replace my body bushings because they're 24 years old, and that life in the hot and dry SW/SoCal had made them brittle, and my truck squeaks like crazy (I'm planning to replace loads of bushings in January). But when I crawled underneath and poked around, I have to say they look and feel quite good.

The tops are harder to see but maybe they're ok too? I don't have much experience to reference so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

it tells me the part 52217-35100 superseded the old part number

Substitutions Toyota 5221735050

I also ran both VIN's thru (Toyota Parts - Genuine OEM Toyota Parts and Accessories Online) to see what they said and they indicate 5221735050 does not fit and to use 52217-35100. so it just means they replaced the old part number. if you can find either you should be good.

I will re-use anything that is in good condition. it seems fine to me to just replace the top bushing. the top one takes all the abuse. if your truck is squeaky it might have compressed those top mounts enough so your body is moving around more than normal. a tiny bit of movement is totally normal.

I'm just going to replace the top bushings and reuse the lower ones and hardware. Priced out all new bushings and hardware using the lowest-cost options between Partsouq and McGeorge and it's $434 before taxes or shipping. Too much when it seems like the lower bushings and hardware are fine.

Does this look correct for upper bushings/mounts? Going from front to back on the truck:

#1: 52201-35090
#2: 52203-35200
#3: 52213-35011 (replaces the discontinued -35010, I think)
#4: 52207-35040
#5: 52209-35010

For #3, TPD says that 4 are required. Is that wrong, and only 2 are needed?
