Brake lines for Tundra upgrade

Doing the Tundra upgrade early next week when my parts get here. I figure ill do extended brake lines now So I wont have to bleed again later as i would like to do a 2-2.5" lift in the future. Anyone have a good recommendation should I go braided? Or what other options do I have? Thanks!

If your brake lines are in good shape, leave them. There's no need to get extended brake lines in the front with a 2.5" lift. Some people do in the rear with 3"+ lift though. I'm at 4" in the back and have everything stock with no problems.

i agree with the above.

BUT, SS lines will give you a bit better brake performance. and since you're upgrading the brakes, it seems thats what you're after.

Leave them. I've got 3" up front and did the TBU yesterday. No need for new lines.

SS lines will reduce brake fade due to heat and heavy usage (rubber lines can expand when they get good and hot). Good for race cars, not going to notice in your family wagon unless you drive like a nut job.

the same could be said about the need to upgrade to larger brakes.
but i see a lot of people on here are doing it.

I am assuming you don't own a 3rd gen with a lot of added weight like bigger tires, aftermarket bumper, etc., but for those who did the Tundra brake upgrade will never go back. Why do you think you see a lot of people on here doing it? Because its that good.

I love my 231mm TBU. After a 3in lift and a 4xInnovations bumper and tires, I can tell the TBU was most definitely a well worth upgrade. Stops on a dime and stops smooth every time. I'd rather be able to stop sooner rather than later. For such an easy mod it's almost silly not to do it. Literally no downsides to it just my .02

I got extended brake lines for the front only with my lift, I don't think it's really necessary, but with a bigger brake I'd hate to have a failing line someone in my system and my lines weren't looking good so I spent the money and got new ones. Well worth it in my opinion.

i think he was just making a statement that the reason other people do it is because they have all this extra weight and need the help stopping. for those who do not have many bolt ons or tow often that they would not really tell a difference from the TBU to stock. most people do it for those reasons and not just because the stock brakes are that bad, they do wonderful for stock applications.

Apples to oranges. SS brake lines and larger brakes both reduce fade, but that's where the similarities end. Larger brakes will give you more friction surface, better heat dissipation (SS lines don't dissipate heat, they just don't expand when hot), less likelihood of warping rotors and better all around performance. All SS lines do is stay semi-rigid when hot. The amount of heat it takes to make a noticeable difference in a rubber brake line is beyond what most of us will encounter in our 4runners except maybe towing a boat down a long mountain pass.

I upgraded to SS lines in my old race car, and you really didn't start to feel the difference until a couple hot laps in (that is a LOT of heat!)

they will perform better when cold also. the rubber lines will swell, cold or hot. the difference may be minor, but it is there.
that said, i think the modern/current brake hose is much better than what we had just a few years ago. so that difference may be getting smaller every year.

not at all. im all for better brakes. and OE upgrades are even better.

ive got vented FJ rotors on my 85 runner.

I just brake Fred Flintstone style and stick my foot out the door. Wears out my shoes faster than normal.

i when with ss line for a few reasons. the rubber lines will eventually fail at some point. i rather replace them before that point or something occurs for instance an accident. i noticed cracking on my lines so i decided to replace them anyway. and having our mischievous pit-bull pup chew on my lines didn't help me want to keep them anyways. for me the biggest thing is the safety factor. the cost of ss lines was not even 80 bucks when i got them and they have a lifetime warranty on them like with all Goodrich ss lines. to each their own.

i said vented, not drilled and slotted.
an 85 runner originally has a solid rotor, very thin and shitty.

What did you guys use for the hard lines between the rubber hose and caliper,Tundra or 4Runner? My driver side one got kinked the last time I did (stock) brakes,so I'll have to change the hard lines when I do the Tundra brake upgrade.

The hard lines that come off the calipers are exactly the same in both 05 Tundra and 4runner. Just different part number.
