Usually it's overheating. I've never overheated my truck so it makes me wonder if it did before I got it at 90K. I'm surprised it didn't become a problem until now (10 years/105K later), but my guess is that maybe the OP overheated it, it weakened them but they didn't crack until recently? Not sure though. I was thinking maybe it's also just because being a mountain truck it's just had a harder life than most middle-class, teenage, white 4runners.

It dies at 205K.
Thanks, I can't wait to get it back! It should be ready now, but I've been at the King of the Hammers all weekend so hopefully I'll be picking it up on Monday!!

It's good to be back!
So I finally got my truck back with a newly rebuilt engine! It took a lot longer than expected (~3 weeks) but I have my 'ol friend again and she is running awesome!! Now I can finally install my OME 861 coils for the rear and my "new and improved" lower links!! Plus I got a cold air intake, a power steering pump and a sweet TRD cat-back exhaust (courtesy of Driffter33) to install now also!
I had to deal with about a foot of snow and putting snow chains on my little Honda CR-V this weekend and boy I'll tell ya, I missed the 4runner a lot! The CR-V is officially back up for sale and I'm just happy to have 4WD again!

The heart transplant was a success!!!! And you got her some new lungs too so she can breath better! Congrats on the new engine man, and I have to say I'd rather them take longer than expected than rush through it. Here's to the next 200K miles being more fun than the first 200k! :beer:

I Hear that! It was a good feeling to go out there this morning in ~20* weather and she just started right up and idled perfect. It's been a while since it hasn't shook and missed like crazy on the 1st startup of the day!

BTW, my gas mileage is still looking pretty bad, it seemed like the needle was going down pretty fast on the way home. I'm thinking/hoping that the ECU is just used to compensating for the engine running so badly and it'll just take a while for it to re-learn everything with a new, great running motor. Any thoughts?

Shouldn't the ECU have reset? I would imagine they'd disconnect the battery while they did the rebuild?

I'd pop off the battery terminal to reset the computer (which I'm sure the guy doing the engine did), but it couldn't hurt.
Also give it a few tanks and take an average...I bounce between a difference of .5mpg to 3mpg depending on conditions

I disconnected the battery for ~45 minutes to reset it when I was at my parent's house before I drove it back the 50 miles to my house. I called the dealership today to ask them and they said resetting the ECU and the ECU actually re-learning the characteristics of the new engine are different. They told me it takes 90 hours of the engine running for the ECU to completely re-learn the timing (ret*rded or avanced), air/fuel ratio, etc..

90 hrs. That's quite a roadtrip. I guess that would be the same as changing the timing belt and adding a supercharger. Good to know.
