Brighter Back Up Lights??

Anyone know a bulb swap to have brighter back up lights?
I don't want to damage anything and prefer not to have to do an entire rear lamp LED swap. Thanks for any help.

I don't know for sure that an LED replacement bulb would be substantially brighter in this application, but if it would be anything like the difference between the interior halogen bulbs and the replacement LEDs, I think it would be good! "LJ_24" is offering LED replacement bulbs for the reverse lights... maybe he'll chime in with some insight. I'm curious as well... brighter back-ups would be nice!

I know you said you don't want to do the LED tail lamp swap but I just recently did it on my '03. It was money very well spent. I went with genuine Toyota parts because they are supposedly the brightest and they fit in perfectly without a struggle (like the initial aftermarket OEM tail lamps did). They have such a clean look to them compared to the '03-'05 tail lamps and it was incredibly easy to install. Can I ask why you were not looking to go this direction?

Not sure about bulbs but I hung a big old light off the back to help see at night.

u need to find some mini fog light and mount to the back under the bumper, theres a thread on here for it. leds are useless for reverse light, color is brighter, but the function is worser.

I put in an LED. The 921 bulb from Superbrightleds. it's a a mini wedge bulb that fairly brighter than the stock and looks good. My vehicle is a 2008 T4R. Cheap upgrade. Cheers

I had lights under bumper as noted above on my last 4x4 but they get all bent up when backing into snow banks to turn around in tight spots. haven't done anything on 4r yet as looking for better solution

Thanks for all the replies. I've seen the "stealth back up lights" before, and they are cool, but looks like they are mounted into the plastic cover? Not too secure, although they might hold just fine.
I like the bulb swap better, I'll look more into those options.

Light bulb swaps didnt do enough.

I took two 1' strips, stuck them to the tow hitch, and wired it to the tow electronics.
Waterproof Ribbon LED Strips

6" ones probably would have done fine.

My Vote goes to” add on” backup lights… you will get what you pay for (money or amount of labor wise), see picture below for what I have.


They are mounted to metal sub frame of the rear bumper; they are turned on (trough relay) with normal backup lights as well as independently by the switch on the dash. BTW those are $20.00 lights from Wal-Mart; they work great!

2005 bumper aux lights, WHITE?

I tried switching out the lights before reading up on the matter. I agree that swapping out a bulb doesn't really help at all IMO.

As stated in another thread, http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-ge...lots-pics.html I really want to mod my rear bumper aux lights to a white lens instead of the red, and then install the lighting. Has anyone else done this? I did a search just to find others using the red lighting. The 2006 bumpers look much better, but I'm going with what I have to work with. Those worthless red non-working lenses. I'm considering this route because I'm about to install LED tails, and really won't need the extra red aux lights.

I just swapped out my stock bulbs for some Sylvania Silver Star 921s. I'll see how they work later tonight when I back out. It's not like my 99 Explorer's backup lights which lit up the entire neighborhood. The stock ones on the 4Runner just..well suck.

How difficult is it installing 3rd party backup lights into the 4Runner?

Is there a back up/reverse light wire in the factory trailer plug? I cant find a wiring diagram, for the plug...i have a hitch rack id like to mount a external backup light on and it would be nice to plug and unplug when i use the hitch rack..thx..
