Broken down but limping in FL

Kinda late to the party, but do you remember if the dipstick was properly seated when you first check the oil level after you discovered the issue?

My dad lost a BMW once when a service station didn't screw the dipstick back in and the pressure pushed all the oil out.. he found out about it when the block cracked.

With the higher location on the block, that may explain the spray pattern.

Not to make fun of your problem, I hope it gets resolved soon too your satisfaction. But your thread title got me to giggle. If you are "limping" in Florida, you will fit right in. EVERYBODY has a limp here. I think it's a law. And by the way, I am also following the law! Be safe and I hope you can still have a very Merry Christmas!

Different yet the same maybe. Could you have been hammering along to the point of causing a leak only while towing? The sweet spot for towing is 55 - 60 mph on flat ground in 4S with converter locked (you have to let up for a sec to create the locked situation). Yes- Florida has "mountains" near Tallahassee (just ask the locals) lol.

Well, that would have been more likely in the hills outside Cumberland, MD on the way to WV.

As far as hammering goes, all the Toyota engines are "technically" designed to run at 75% of max RPM for their lifespan, if they have appropriately cooled and stuff. (ETA: I know the ZZFE and previous 4 cyl series can develop divability problems if they didn't get the snot revved out of them once in a while)

Pulling the 3800 lb travel trailer, on the flats it can hold 68 - 70 mph in 5th, tq locked. Any grade, you're either in passing gear or 4th if you don't want to keep shifting back and forth. On a manual downshift to 4, it unlocks the torque converter and then locks it again. It's pretty noticeable.

Update: At the dealer (Legacy in Tallahassee) now. Service adviser quote: "Oh wow."

I know what you're talking about on the BMWs - at least the 1.6L and 1.8L engines on the 2002's, and I don't think that can happen on the 1GR-FE in our trucks without removing the dipstick entirely. And even then, the PCV would cause dirt to get sucked into the engine rather than oil coming out most of the time.

Question for your dad: What did he think was happening when the oil light went on? Or was the bulb burned out?
 
Confirmed front crank seal leak. Sooo, short of truck shopping, any recommendations on what to do around Tallahassee? We'll be here a while.

Sorry to hear about your trouble… hopefully dealer will fix it as quick as possible.
How many miles are on the truck?

At least it's still under warranty, i'd start shopping and trade her before 36K. The bottom of that motor could be weak, something isn't right, even with the power train warranty it could end up being a ticking time bomb.
 
Short update:

The front main seal was replaced on the 27th, and we drove to Vero Beach on the 28th, no issues. Legacy Toyota also did a steam clean and detail on the truck, and apparently their used car detailers spray some sort of glossy stuff all over the engine and so on. Anyone know how to get that off?

And it continues: spent all day in the urgent care today with a pneumonia relapse - awesome vacation this is turning out to be.

leaking seal at 34000miles? what kind of POS seals is that??
is anyone making a quality vehicles these days? apparently not Toyota.
at least power train warranty is good for another 26000 miles.
I know I will be getting rid of mine, IMHO Toyota reliability is down the drain.

Word. I got outed as ex armor mos by the mechanic at Ourisman Toyota on my first visit there, and I still tend to break more stuff than the average Joe. So assume if it can be broken, it breaks for me first. Heck, I can't even buy a food processor that doesn't die on the first use.

I have gotten better - I drove a Chevy Caprice Interceptor for the longest time because whatever I broke ("reached engineering limits on") on it would not leave it dead on the side of the road. GM side post batteries, starters excepted.

And... I was amazed today by how much one injection per gluteus max helped things. They hurt so much the joint pain was gone right away, and I woke up four hours later feeling... Dare I say it - well.

Thanks! Actually, everyone but me wins the odd dollar, so now the wife does the lottery ticket buying.

Feeling good enough to continue my recovery relaxing on the beach, weather permitting.
 
Don't feel bad - I don't do too well with lottery tickets either. A few years back a supervisor at work bought $1 scratch tickets for everyone. I won $100 and invited co-workers for a beer after work. By the time the night was over, my tab was $150. When I got home I told my wife and she said "where's my half?" So I won $100 and it cost me $200! I did have fun though.
 
Sorry about your tough luck

If anything can make you feel better it is sitting out on one of Florida's beautiful beaches. Of course, we are experiencing a little cold snap now. Should be nice for New Years Eve and Day though.

I beat the hell out of my stuff too, shotguns, mud motors, hunting gear, ect. It doesn't take long to find out what is the real deal, and what is crap. So far T4R's are the real deal.
