Building the Black Pearl...

Been quite a while since I’ve posted here but figured I’d update the thread a little.

Black pearl has taken me on many off road adventures. Today I added a winch to her arsenal which I’ve wanted to do for a while now. Next up is some sliders and a rear locker.

I went with a rough country 9500lb synthetic winch. Before the rough country bashing begins, I got an incredible deal on it from an acquaintance so it was to good to pass on.

Looks completely hidden behind the shrockworks bumper except for where the lead comes out. Mounted the control box under the hood, tucked in the fender space next to the battery. All in all I’m super happy so far. Now time to go get stuck so I can use it

Just got done running the off-road course at the off road expo and I couldn’t be happier with how she did. I was the only Toyota in a sea of jeeps. Had multiple compliments from the jeep guys which was cool since I wasn’t sure how they were going to take a Toyota mingling with them .

I bypassed two obstacles out of 6. 1 because it was a pretty extreme obstacle of rocks for the dedicated crawlers to tackle and 1 because the course was still wet (it’s raining today) and I currently don’t have sliders installed and the chance of crushing a panel was there. Do I think she could have done it? Absolutely with no question. It was more of my skill that I questioned.

Icons were dialed to the softest setting, didn’t deflate tires at all and no sway bars were disco’d. Running general grabber at2’s. She had no problem at all with the course and it soaked up the rocks and drops very comfortably. Again, I couldn’t be happier with the performance. This suspension did everything I asked of it.

I had planned on putting it on the flex dyno (not sure if that’s the proper term) but it started raining again and I’m getting hangry. If I come back tomorrow I’ll throw it on there.

nice write up about the capabilities of your mostly stock drive train 4wd. Its nice to see someone actually do a write up about how their 4 runner actually performs offroad especially after you put so much hard work into it. You actually have a build thread that has action in it..lol

Adding sliders to the black pearl has been on the list of things to do for a while. Now that I’m not traveling as much and I’ve been spending a lot more time off road, I finally got around to pulling the trigger. I found a fabricator who had just started his own business after many years working for someone else. I was happy with the work I had seen from him from the other shop so we moved forward with the project. So far I’m super happy with the design and the quality of his workmanship! What’s your guys thoughts?
