Bumper expriment

Nice mod. I have a spare 4th Gen front lower skin. I have to check it out on my 4th and see what I can do with it
 
Yes I too would like to see more pics and what was your method of cutting? Dremel? Did you mask off first or what?
 
I'll post/take some more pictures soon.

I used a jigsaw with a small 20TPI Bosch U101A0 blade.

Cuts it like butter. Taped off the lines and went slow and used a steady hand to create clean smooth lines. Used a sander to blend it a little on the edges...

I started out not really caring what it looked like, but now that it looks decent. I think I will go back and touch up the paint a bit and possibly clear coat it.
 
Cool thanks. Can't wait to see them. Yes I was thinking the same thing. If not just clear coat where you cut to keep from peeling or chipping away little by little. I've been looking for ideas on how this should be done with out dumping $1500+ in bumpers.

I dig it. A bit too high on the sides for me. I'm ocd so everything had to be even. Well I started by removing that lower valance already and that seemed to help. I just need to a bit farther it seems. So you said a jig saw?

Yea, A little electric jigsaw that can use the blade I referenced.

I cut the sides higher, because I wanted maximum clearance. Many large obstacles get approached with an angle of attack to take advantage of that clearance.
 
Did you do the cut on or off the car? Also I noticed your sig. You run 4.56? Is your speedo off or is there scratchy correct it?
 
Cutting must be done off the car. Spedo has nothing to do with gearing, just tires on these trucks. So my spedo is off, but because of 34" tires. It was about right with 285/70/17 tires.

I did a bit more tweaking to the bumper tonight. Added some aluminum supports to stabilize the front lip and got my fender liners pushed way up out of the way. I did not like how flimsy it felt. Feels solid now. Will post more pics later. Hope to get it out in the dirt this weekend!

Also relocated the washer bottle. Found a very cheap and easy solution. Will post pics of that also when I get a chance.

Yea, I'm suppose to be at hidden falls tomorrow. Work and some other stuff might get in the way, but as of right now I'm going and planning on camping Sat night and do some more wheeling Sunday.

The Houston FJC group you mentioned is probably part of our group. I think the plan is to start around 10am. There will be folks camping in area 51 tonight, so I'm assuming that will be the meeting spot. The group is not Toyota specific but pretty much everyone has a Toyota, so should be easy to spot. There will be a white thrid gen and a black FJ with signs on the doors that say Heart of Texas Offroad. Feel free to join us. Hope to see you there.
 
Wait wait wait. I'm fairly new to the 4R. Always had Landrover or Hummer before. So I can regear and the speedo isn't recorded of the driveline? Not to sound ignorant, just always had to do that with my other trucks.

Yea, the 5th gen uses wheel speed sensors for speedometer and odometer...

There is one on each wheel, this is what is also used for ATRAC, ABS, and other stability control electronics.
 
A few action shots. It worked extremely well. The truck is way more capable than me now. MTRs are just amazing.

What trail is that on? I did not see that one yesterday. That last part looks pretty tough. Oh, and I'll second your opinion on MTR's. Yesterday was my first run with mine, and they did great. I am especially impressed that I had no chunking even on that nasty, sharp, broken limestone. My BFG All Terrains chunked on the first trail they ever saw in Moab.
