Bumper expriment

A friend of mine who is a member here [MENTION=809]fattire[/MENTION], got a shockworks bumper so I got his old cover for an experiment.

His car was white, so I painted it with truck bed liner... The idea is not to be afraid to tear it up a bit. I cut it so that it followed the underlying aluminum bumper to provide the absolute maximum approach angle with the stock structure in place. I think it turned out pretty good (better than I expected). I will hopefully have a trail report next week.

Several new things to try out... Tires, Swaybar disconnect, Front bumper cover mods, rear bumper cover mods, new hitch skid.....

Tape it off on both lower sides and Plasti-dip it.

good idea and great execution - I think this is a nice alternative to getting a new bumper - it provides a little extra clearance and looks pretty sharp.

Some trail damage on the low hanging plastics are inevitable on these if you do anything in the rocks... You should have seen what this cover looked like before I cut it up and sanded it down. It actually had holes and rips in it. Fattire had beat the piss out of it.

My other one looks about like yours on both corners, but it is really not very noticeable unless you get down low. I used some touch up paint on it.

And in case anyone is wondering. The clearance is increased by about 2" center and about 5" in front of each tire.

Just from the few times I've had mine offroad, the front cover is all beat to piss under there as well.

I did the rear a while ago. It's not very extreme... but I got rid of everything that I could without making it look too crazy. I would like to try something else if I can find another used cover for free.

Ok, OK! Now I'm getting kinda happy over here. Those cuts fix just about everything I hate about the look of my truck. The front hanging down too low, and those stupid fake mesh panels in the back.

No way! Has nothing to do with airbags or anything safety related. The underlying aluminum bumper is still in place and fully intact.

The overall cover is much less stable (not that it really matters). Aerodynamics are also probably negatively impacted. I may add some support brackets/panels if there is any noticeable noise or vibration at highway speeds.

Not sure what you're getting at there ;-P

The second picture shows the passenger side mount in the center of the skin. The driver side mount was completely ripped off the bumper right where it meets the main body of the skin. There was also a pretty significant (4"?) tear/split on the passenger side near the fog lamp.

Glad the project turned out so well. I think it looks great and can't wait to see it this weekend. Should buy you some time to wait on an aluminum front bumper.

Yes but they were already cut to fix rubbing of his 34" tires. Looks like there was additional trimming beyond that, though, after the cut skin went on.

side note: never noticed how many guys were also running MTR's. great tire, absolutely love mine!
