Buying a 3.4 but need your guys opinion.

I have a ‘94 3.0 4x4 auto tranny. Came across a gentleman selling a 3.4 with harness, ECU, auto tranny, transfer case for 1000 bucks. It’s coming out of a ‘99 4Runner.

Now my question is, the engine has about 256k miles and timing belt was done at 197k. What am I expecting for an engine that high in miles? Are these engines built to last with proper maintenance? Sounds like a smoking deal and take it? Also, approximately how much is to rebuild at a shop? Just wanted to hear some opinions from the community. Thanks!

256k is a lot without proper maintenance, but if they kept it up and clean then it shouldn't be an issue. The 99 is better than a 01-02 which had a problem with an oil valve.

Most important is the compression. If you're low on compression, then a rebuild would be in the works. For a top end, a shop quoted me 2.5-3k. Top and bottom end was 4k
