Buying Filters off Amazon is Sometimes Concerning

Its the fraud Im concerned about. I doubt that Amazon would buy grey market stuff and resell it as original.

I guess I could buy them and return them if they dont show up in OE packaging etc.

tons of counterfeit items from china on amazon. some of it in packaging thats identical to the original. But when you use it it breaks or is made from inferior or weakened parts. Its gotten worse over the last few years.

Buying anything off Amazon is concerning anymore. Their site has really took a shit the last few years with counterfeit, knockoff products. All about $$$.

I can't find the article. But marketing group did a random-ish test maybe four or five years ago where they bought a few hundred items on Amazon and then worked with the manufacturers to identify which ones were counterfeit and which were legitimate. And my memory is the result was roughly 25% of everything they bought was counterfeit.

Stories like that have been around forever.
Sears demanded cheaper washing machines from Maytag 30 years ago, something about the gears and transmissions not being top grade.

Costco had different Michelin tires sold only to them for less about 15 years ago.

I guess you get what you pay for.

All stock at Amazon is intermingled. Anything that can be counterfeited is and sold by Amazon. It doesn’t matter if it says ‘sold by Amazon.’ Best bet is to avoid the site all together, and only purchase items from actual retailers or, even better, direct when possible. Amazon is only good for the cheap, alibaba-type stuff that isn’t name brand anyway.

Pictures of the intake air filter that I received and a single picture of the original.
I have seen other pictures of Wix boxes where they have put a Wix sticker over the sticker on the box. The Wix filter picture on their site also says "made in China" and has very similar numbers printed on the filter to the one I received. The part numbers are the same.

Wix confirmed that I received one of their filters after I gave them the numbers printed on it. They said they double sticker them at the warehouse. They also said that they do not sell directly to Amazon so it must have come from a parts distributor.

I’d check the packaging and build quality closely and compare them to a known-good filter you already trust; small things like glue seams and pleat consistency usually give away fakes. I’ve also found that looking up consumer-aid articles on sites like Pedirayudas is under construction helps me keep track of legit deals and avoid stuff that feels too cheap to be real. Buying from a local parts counter once just for comparison can also calm the nerves.

counterfeit spark plugs, in particular, are a serious issue on amazon.

not worth risking any critical parts to save a couple bucks anymore. i get all the air and oil filters from the dealer parts counter now...its a pain to go get them and obviously more money but i just buy 3-4 filters at a time to make it worth my while and i know i'm getting the authentic product.

Amazon will sell anything seller offers including counterfeit Toyota parts, including $0.99 drain plug washers. I know that for a fact. That can cost some one catastrophic oil loss and engine failure. By the way labeling was OEM looking.

There are any number of Toyota dealers selling parts for a great price on line. When I bought my 4R I bought a case (10 each) of oil filters for $42.00, so $4.20 a filter, from a Toyota dealership. With tax the total came to $44.98. Shipping was free.

That was almost three years ago now so I'm sure the prices have gone up since then.
