Can We Talk CV Angles - And When to Do Something About Them?

I hope this helps others trying to understand the same issue and solutions.

I have a 2015 Trail w/ KDSS, the Toytec Ultimate Adjustable Coilovers. I have them set where my center of hub to fender measurement is 22" (not too much lift). I love the ride and am happy with the look as well. But of course I'd like to go higher (and have the adjustment to in the coil overs to do so).

As we lift our IFS vehicles, we have to be aware of increasing our CV angles. I've heard that the CV boot life starts to become compromised when the "ribs" touch each other. The higher you go, the worse this condition becomes.

I understand there are limited solutions to this:
1 - you can install a differential drop kit which lowers the front diff to help reduce the CV angle (but also decreases ground clearance under the diff)
2 - you can install different 'hose clamps' to spread out the CV boots to help reduce the touching but this seems a little 'home-brewed'.

Anything else a guy can do to limit the effect of lifting on the CV boots (and the CV's themselves)?

And, at what angle do you REALLY start compromising your CV's and what in the world is everyone doing about it? There are plenty of guys on here with much more lift than I - did you resign to the fact your CV boots will prematurely wear? What did YOU do about it? I've seen some Toyota's at the dealership with factory-installed lifts and their CV angles are much more severe than mine. Is it just not that big of a deal?

I'll show you mine if you show me yours! Also, post up some hub-to-fender measurements if you don't mind.

(My end goal: get comfortable with cranking my lift up another inch or so to gain some more clearance.)

You are not going to get any sort of real exact answer here or anywhere else...nobody is really doing anything besides limiting lift.

I can tell you my truck sits a tad under 24" center of hub to top of fender flare. It has not had any issues so far. Truck has 70k or so, but the lift has changed up a bit over that time and I'm not sure how many miles were stock ride height (it had a lift when I got it with 45k). With 34" tires. I have all the clearance up front anyone would ever need in a 5th gen. My only real clearance problems are my rear LCA brackets. That is where I now hang up most of the time.

3 - 3.5" is the limit. Beyond that and you start having issues. The diff drop kits will not help, since they don't really drop the diff.. just angle it.

First timer here and not to resurrect and old thread, but I'm a little concerned with my CV angles as well. I just installed a Toytect Ultimate 3" with LR UCA's. I performed pre and post lift measurements for reference.

These measurements are from the middle of the hub to the bottom of the outer plastic fender well trim.

Front: before/after
Driver: 20.5"/23.25"
Passenger: 20.5"/23.125"

Rear: before/after
Driver: 22"/24"
Passenger: 22"/24"

I will try to post pics of my CV angles as well.

What do you guys think about my lift measurements and the angles it caused. Also, is it common to have the two coilovers look so different in regards to how much each one is adjusted?

You are fine. The coils are often adjusted differently to level it out side to side....

What this man said. My passenger side coilover is about 1/3rd an inch of pre-load, and my driver side is like 1.5" because of the lean.

Myself I wouldn't be comfortable with those CV angles. Your measurements seem reasonable, but I had 2.5" lift on the '07 with the Boss kit and the CV angles were not near that bad. I dropped it down to 2" because I kept the stock UCA's and while the alignment was in specs it was too floaty.

I stumbled on this thread Googling "4Runner CV angles" because I'm planning on a 2.5" lift with a Boss kit/SPC UCA's on the '08 Runner I bought and wanted to doublecheck I wouldn't have CV problems.

BTW, Toytec told me (Boss coilovers) that 1/4" of thread change = 1/2" of lift.

I agree. I've pretty much decided I'm going to drop the front down a bit.

If [MENTION=106176]wfo9[/MENTION] & [MENTION=124732]LawnDart[/MENTION] said you are fine, I wouldn't worry about it. I am at about the same heighth as you, and it looks good, and rides good. Many have thousands of miles with CV angles like yours or worse...

I appreciate the insight. It's my first time lifting a 4Runner and first time dealing with IFS. It's all new territory for me.
 
Actual CV Axle Angle - in degrees

Thanks for the post. I’ve read a lot about CV axle angles in posts but all comments are made on relative visual observation. I finally went out and got a digital level (magnetic level made by Johnson - sold on Amazon and Lowes) to see exactly what angle my CV axle angles are at after a 3” lift and a 1” diff drop (2014 SR5). The measurement came in at 2.6 degrees (dropping from the differential to the wheel). I’m super interested in finding out what the stock angle is to see how far i’m off. Any feedback is appreciated.
