Cargo area light

The lack of a cargo area light has been a hot topic lately (slight understatement!). Searching back through old threads, it looks like various members were playing with mod ideas over the last year, but I didn't see a thread showing completed work.

For anyone who did decide to add a light in the cargo area, would you please share your ideas / lessons learned? I’m interested in adding some type of light back there eventually, but just trying to decide how big a bite to take into this project.

I'm waiting until I get my cargo build out done. Then I'll know where the lights need to be placed and what type to use. The power will get tapped from the dome light, so they operate at the same time. Most likely it will be small LEDs but it might just be a single generic dome light.

Take a look at the repair manual and pull your own dome light apart, then put it back together. You'll see how easy it is to tap into it and be better able to decide how you want to proceed.

Yep Kevin, Snoop was one of the members I remembered had some ideas up his sleeve. That was a great thread to get the bulbs upgraded to LEDs, but it doesn't show final products for the cargo area. For all I know...there might not be any final products out there yet!
 
I bought some LED strips from Oznium, I was gonna just stick them on the rear plastic trim pieces. Haven't done it yet though. They are staying cozy in my desk drawer here at work till I get around to installing them. :mad:

i must have some kind of disease cause i am always craving for a mod. i could never let em just sit in a desk n wait. as soon as they arrive they go in the runner... aaaah. haha.

im itchin right now cause ive got leds in the mail. cant wait!:jump::jump::jump:
 
part#'s for dome light

I called my local dealer the other day and confirmed the following parts to be needed for the 2nd (rear) dome light.

81240-35020-b0 (dome assembly) $40

821710-35B00 (Wire harness) $145 :wow2:
*I was told this part includes the power in to the actual dome assembly and is required. I plan on hitting an Autozone or like store to find the required pieces to tie it all together (dome assembly, power, bulb housing)

I plan on getting this on order soon and will update when I do. I look forward to anyone else that beats me to the punch.
 
What wires does that harness all have in it? I wouldn't be surprised if it was bundled with a ton of wires that are unrelated to the light.

I haven't tackled this project yet, but it is on my list of things to do. I might have found an excellent light to use though. On the 2011 Sienna I saw at the dealership the other day while getting my first 5k inspection, I noticed these jems in the 2nd row seating where the sliding doors open (look at the picture, the lights are located next to the grab handles). This might be the ticket for us. My thoughts were you could mount one on each side of the 4Runner cargo area. It has two lights within the fixture. One that acts as a standard dome light, and the 2nd one is identical to an airplane reading lights as they rotate up/down/left/right so you could shine the light at certain spot in the cargo area if you so desired. Haven't priced them yet, but it's a cool idea that would provide TONS of lighting since each fixture has 2 lights. HTH

I would double check on this dealer info because there wasn't an option in any 4runner for a second dome light. All those part numbers are for the one that's already in there. There is no place to put a second one unless you go custom and if your going to do that there are alot cheaper and better alternatives.Especially for the wiring harness! Like 2 wires and connectors coming off the first light for about a buck.

That is a pretty cool idea with the reading lights.Never seen that in a vehicle before.It would have to be a custom job though. My daughters are avid readers and would love that idea!

Definitely a good find! It would be great to see those installed, even for those of us without a 3rd row. Might be slightly challenging, but anything is possible!

LED Cargo area light strips!

Yes I have done it! I bought LED strips from Autozone. The only thing I have not done is wire it correctly to the rear cargo lights. Right now they are wired to the dome light over the second row. So, they come on when I open the front and second row doors, or when I use the switch on that dome light, but NOT when I open the rear lift gate. That is a problem because I have to leave one of the four front doors open for it to stay on for more than 20 or 30 seconds. I plan on changing the wiring to the lift gate soon, but it still looks the same. I need to take more pics. The other thread has some info on it about this too. First impressions:

1. They are frekin REAL bright, since I have two strips on each side.
2. It is now really nice to see everything back there, and the difference is massive! I now can't stand the thought of not having that extra light.
3. They are stuck to the rear pillars, so things won't hit them that often, and it sheds light in the same direction as I am looking when I am loading and unloading things.
4. Beats the heck out of cutting holes in your headliner.
5. The wires are only exposed a very tiny bit since I ran them right into the panel behind the little panel door where you access the tail lights.
6. People who notice them are blown away by how nice the light is. Some also think that my t4r is a limo (not good IMO). (another reason I would like to have them only come on with the rear lift gate, which they will soon!)

Snooper- Please post up how you wire this in, I'd really like to do this too. I like the idea of the LED strip. Seems to me the ideal would be to have them work right along with the tailgate lights. I have LEDS in mine, so current draw should not be a prob.

Curious if anyone knows what mechanism is used for the tailgate to turn the tailgate lights on/off? I went out to mine last night and looked and looked for a switch of some kind.... must be in the latch is all I can figure.

Don't know what mechanism exactly, but it is in the lift gate latch somewhere, not a push button like the four front doors. That is why it took me so long to do this mod, because I was scared to get in there too deep. Please send all of your other questions in this thread below. I am glad to help!
