Cargo cover question.

Posed this question earlier on other forums with no response: Still very new to the Toyota world and especially this forum. I recently picked up a 97 4runner missing it's cargo cover but has the mounting brackets still attached. I've searched a little and know that the 3rd and 4th gen covers are a different style. (square vs rounded on ends) My question is are the 96-02 and 03-09 cargo covers the same dimensions otherwise? If so can't I just swap mounting brackets and put a newer model cover in back. The reason I'm asking is I might have access to one for cheap but don't want to drive the three hours on the off-chance it might fit. Any help is much appreciated.

personally, I wouldn't take the risk. I'm pretty sure the 4th gens are wider outside and that would relate to a wider interior space. If you did use one it probably wouldn't fit without modification... and that would mean a 4th gen tonneau would have to be cut down or make space in the back somehow. If somebody could chime in with a 4th gen measurement, you can compare it to the 3rd gen measurements. I just measured mine from longest outside points and it's about 53 3/8"

You could also just search junkyards or classifieds for people parting out vehicles to find one from a 3rd gen. Almost anything can be had that way with some patience and determination.

Okay, I figured there was a chance it would be too wide, just thought I'd ask. All of the pick-a-parts out here are having 50% off on the 28th so I'm probably going to scrounge around for a new cover and few other things. (See what I dig up.) Thanks for the heads up.

Is it really cheap if you have to drive 3 hours to get it and still buy new mounting brackets?

Sounds to me you will have $50+ in gas and probably another $20 in parts (probably more since nobody sells those cheap). Not to mention the half day in getting it.

I believe the 01-02 mounting brackets are different than the 96-00. I have heard you can swap mounting brackets if you have access to some. I have not tried this so hopefully someone chimes in on validity.

I bought mine from ebay in bidding last month. I won bid for $36 plus $30 for delivery. It took me 2 plus month in finding one in gray, for my 2000 runner and it was in awesome condition. So, relax and take your time in finding one in good condition with price you wana pay

By cheap I mean a 12 pack of beer to an old friend I used to serve with. Just looking to see if it was something worth getting into or not. I'll just hold out another week and a half and see what I find at the salvage yards. My neighbor and I are going to see if we can find anything for our 4Runners worth grabbing anyways. Between his newborn and my wife that's almost due, it'll give us both a day away from all the baby stuff anyways.

Yeah, that is a pretty good deal but after travel expenses and parts you will probably have $100 and 6 hours of travel in it.
