Chainsaws!

They make the 291 now, its pretty much the same saw as the old farm boss. Also if you like the size/power of the farm boss I'd highly recommend the 261 c-m its a fantastic saw. Its built a little better then the 290/291 (no plastic) and has a little more power. Also has that mtronic computer chip in it that adjusts for temp and altitude so it starts on the first pull pretty much every time and always has the right fuel air mixture.

If you're only going to have 1 saw, a 50 cc engine with an 18 inch bar will cover nearly anything you should be tackling. The MS 290 Farm Boss, while you can still find one, is the best bang for the buck. Once those sell out, it's replacement the MS 291. While the 290's are on clearance, you should be able to pick one up for about $370.

I found a 290 with a 20" bar for about $400. There's hardly any 290's left, so I think I'm gonna jump on it.

Do you think that bar will be too big for general use?

it is a bit big, but not too bad. you can always put a short bar on it later.

my 20" with skip tooth chain cuts better than my 16" and eco/anti-kick back chain.

that's a decent price for that saw, I would buy it.

It will bog down if you bury the bar in some hardwood. You should do ok if you take it easy on the pressure.
 
its been awhile. the girl has been wanting her own saw for a while now.
so I got her an ms170 for her birthday :D. I got it with a 12" bar, for ease of use. though, it may be just bit too small, I may step up to a 14". I think that will be just about right.

I don't have any pics, but I use it more than she does lol.
 
Oh wow didn't realize there was a chainsaw thread.
I have an old McCulloch 3516 that I rescued from a coworkers shed and rebuilt. Put a long summer in with that saw clearing some oak and citrus trees off a construction site and it held up like a champ. Sadly one of the bar bolts has stripped and I haven't had time to take it to a machine shop to replace the offending stud. One of these days...

shouldn't have to apply pressure at all if the saw is properly sharpened. it should pull through the wood. the best practice is to sharpen a sharp chain, not wait until it gets nicked/dull. my little husky 353 (18" bar) pulls through red oak and other hardwoods no problem, even pieces that are bigger than 24"

bogging will be a problem with skip chain. normal chain works better, unless using a professional saw.

i used to have a nice husky 55 (non-rancher) that i really liked. it grew feet so i had to replace it.




i like seeing those older relics, but i wouldn't use one on a regular basis. nowhere near as safe, with higher probability of carpal tunnel.
 
Didn't know there was a chainsaw thread going here either. Started out with the venerable Stihl FarmBoss. Along with various other tools I'd occasionally bring them with me to work to make a project easier. Stupidly left it overnight in what was generally always a secure spot in our operations shed and of course the next morning it must have grown legs and walked off....

Needless to say was pretty pissed but the powers that be made good and not only replaced it but allowed me a "bit" of an upgrade and now have the MS390 instead. Great saw, albeit a bit heavier. Have had great luck with it and Stihls in general. About the only Stihl product I've had issues with is their backpack blowers, although I'd attribute at least some of the issues are user related. Like they say, good help is hard to find!

I acquired my poulan several years ago in kind of an odd way. I worked at a lexus dealer and noticed a chain saw setting next to the dumpster. A little odd... why was a saw at a lexus dealership... Either way I let it sit there for like 3 weeks, then went and looked at it. Looked okay, the chain was a little rusty, so I gave her a pull... not locked up. Took her home and noticed the gas tank was dry, filled her up and pulled 3 times. :flamethrwoer2: Fired up and ran great. I don't get it, but have been in love ever since. Have had to change the fuel lines, but nothing major.

I need to cut a doorway at my house in concrete to connect our two basements. I called around and the lowest quote I got was $1700 to do it... or I could buy this badass for $2,200.
