whats up guys.

with fall reaching around, i'm looking to replace my old poulan saw with a Stihl. more specifically, I'm looking at an ms250.

there ware some factory recondition ones at my local shop for around $200.. does that seem reasonable for it? if not, what what you guys recommend?

my main purpose will be around the house with occasional fire wood cutting.

you cant go wrong with a Stihl. I cant speak specifically to the ms250, they are all great.

My family has 2 ms250's they are good saws and $200 refurbed is a fair price. I've seen lower and I've seen higher. My family has a tree farm and our saws put up with a lot more than the average saw would and these have lasted. And are easy to maintain and fix. If your just doing fire wood cutting I would go with a 16" blade. I think you'd also be fine with an ms171 with a 16" blade too if you're just cutting firewood

I always try to steer people towards the MS261, but if that isn't in your budget, the 250 will be just fine for your intended purposes, and $200 for a refurb isn't bad.

Edit: MN4runnerman is right about the bar size. No need to go bigger than 16", and the saw will perform better with it.

I use a Stihl 170 for back country camping, wilderness travel etc. - fire wood. I would never go back and this saw does the job well. I would buy new http://www.stihlusa.com/products/chain-saws/homeowner-saws/ms170/

i picked up a new ms250 last spring - If I had it to do over again, I think I would go a tad smaller.

I cut between 3-4 cord a year plus normal clean up and work around the place. the 250 is an awesome saw, but its bigger than what I need for sure.

I like my 170

I bought a new 170 for $179 for the same reasons you need one.

If need be, there are larger saws I can borrow. For around the house, the 170 is perfect. Nice and lightweight, and it's not overkill.

Also, I liked that it has the old-school chain/bar tightening. The toolless ones to me are problematic. I say go old-school. Less parts to break.

the ms250 refurb for $209 isn't too bad.. I want something that last.. some thing i can take it camping with.

I have ran them all husky echo dolmar stihl.. dolmar is by far the one with the least vibration..

i've got a dolmar weed whacker I've been very happy with. can't see how anything else could be better
