Changing Tire Size or Wheels? Read this first!

Mind sharing how your alignment is set?

I'm running BFG KO2 285/70/17 mounted on TRD Pro 17x7 wheels with the Icon Stage 2 lift (3" front lift and 2" rear) and it's a perfect fit. Zero rubbing issues and zero trimming required. The Icon UCAs allowed for ideal alignment specs. Overall handling is much improved. It seems like my turning radius is improved with this setup as well. With the new Load Range E tires, I've been experimenting with the PSI and I can run them up to around 48 PSI maintaining comfortable ride quality. At 48 PSI I'm getting the same or better MPG than what I was getting with the stock setup.

Thank you very much for taking the time to post this wfo9 and 1engineer for stickying it. I'm one of those new guys interested in going with larger tires.

Hey Lowcel,

Did you rub at all with the 285's? I want to do the same set up.

Hey Lowcel,

I've done the inner fender mod but I didn't push it forward quite enough on the driver's side. I get a slight rub when in reverse with the wheel turned all the way to the right.

Need help/advice:
I just had a toytec ULK installed with SPC UCAs (set at +4 caster). I also had 17" x 8.5" SCS Ray10s on 285/70/17 ko2s. and I had spidertraxx 1.25" wheels spacers installed...Everything looks sweet, but I've come to realize it's not cool if you can't park your truck.. The back of the tires rub, so I removed the mudflaps, but it still rubs on the body mount. The front of the tire does not/never rubbed on the fender liner (should it? is the caster right?) So I guess my questions to solve the problem are:
1) Do I just remove the spacers? (decrease scrub radius)
2) Do I boss-up and do a body mount chop?
3) Any other advice?

If you want to eliminate contact, the body mount will have to be chopped back, especially if you're running spacers and only at +4 on the caster.
I removed my spacers when I went to a new set of wheels with a lower 4" BS. As far as stance goes, it's very similar and has the added benefit of eliminating the additional clearance issues associated with increased sweep angle. As long as you have enough space between the tip of your UCA and the inside of the tire, I'd say remove the spacers and give yourself all the clearance you can get between the fender well and the tire on all sides. You'll be much happier.

Another alternative that's more $ if you want to keep a wider stance is to have a set of + 1.25" per side long travel a-arms built by someone like Camburg. It should solve the rub issue if you remove your spacers.

Correct tires?

Great Thread.........

I need some advice on tires size. Looking to change tires to go to a more aggressive tire than stock on my 16 trail edition. I have installed bilstein 5100s to level the front. I do most of my driving on road. I do not want to change my stock wheels. I was thinking of the 275 k02s.
Will there be any rubbing on the front, mud flaps need to come off?
How much difference will there be in noise and mileage?
Is there a better tire choice or size?

Very simply you don't know until you try. Lift does very little to avoid rubbing with these trucks as it's mostly about alignment and the body mount. For most they are fine with 275's but there could be minor rubbing on the mudflaps or fender liner. There are tons of threads on this but if you increase the stock tire weight by essentially 15lbs a piece you are going to loose MPG's (which is what you get with e-load all terrain tires in a larger size). Also realize your ride characteristics are going to change with a LT e-load tire. They have much stiffer sidewalks so you will get a "harsher" ride.

I think you have to ask, what are your intended uses for your truck and go from there. E-load tires are complete overkill for someone who does not tow or off road in rocks consistently. If you are in it just for the look there are more aggressive all terrains that you can get in p-rated versions.

In the end if you don't want to worry about it stick with a stock size passenger rated all terrain (Cooper at3, Nitto terra grappler, and Falken AT3/W come to mind).

Ps: read this...as almost all the answers you search for (literally) you shall seek!

Removed Spacers ---> No Rub. That was easy. I do however miss that stance it had with the spacers

You cannot have your cake and eat it too....

If you want the wide stance... You have to pay and go with a +2" LT kit. It will cost you big time and would totally not be worth it unless you planned to really utilize the travel offroad. It requires specific coil overs, UCAs, LCAs. CV axles... very pricey.

You may be able to run a 1"-1.25" spacer with those wheels and tires if you do the BMC, but I doubt it.

Im looking at these wheels that are 9.5" wide and only come in a 10mm or 20mm offset. It sounds like the backspace wont be much different than what some are doing with 4.5 backspace and spacers but im wondering how many problems ill run into with the wider wheel and which offset is an easier route.

This is also a sanity check in case im missing something altogether :brushteeth:

New to the forum and own a new 2016 T4R Limited with stock 20's. It is very squirrelly in the snow. Looking to change tire size to 17's as recommended by Les Schwab's. The Toyota dealership says not to do this.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Thank you!

You mean change wheel size, right? Are you doing that to have a better selection of snow tires? I don't know why they would say not to.

After getting stuck in 7" of snow

Thank you for the info posted here. Just purchased a 2014 Limited with X-Reas last month. My wife and I are so excited to have a new 4Runner. And after being stuck in such a pathetic amount of snow this week, I will be doing a leveling toytec kit and a wheel and tire swap. I will be removing the factory 20" wheels and replacing with 18x9". I'll post before and after pictures.

You may lose gas mileage by 1.5-3 MPG FYI

I have a 3" lift going on in a couple weeks, but now im pondering REALLY hard on what tire size to go with. I do a ton of exploring in the Rocky Mountains, on decapitated, gnarly old logging roads, and dont want to get myself in too much of a sticky situation. I have read this post front to back a bunch of times, trying to decide.

I hate to day it, but im going with a RevTek kit. Only reason being it was recommended by the dealer, and they will keep the warranty. Once that is done, i will change the lift to something better.

Anyway, i would like to put something on thats a little bigger then stock. I have 285/70/17 Duratracks on my list, as well as, BFG K02's. Should i even be going with a 285 in these tires, since i wont be changing the UCA's for a little bit? or should i stick with 265's? I have also noticed that most tires in a 285 are E rated. Will this be WAY too stiff? I was thinking of putting them onto some 8.5" Methods.

Thank you for all your expert advice. Its getting close to crunch time, and its stressing me out hahaha!
