Changing Tire Size or Wheels? Read this first!

Yea I feel you. I was looking high and low for photos of white 4runners on 275s without a lift.

Awesome! That looks great.

I think I've made it my mind on tires and lift.
It'll be either Toytec or Icon lift in the front. Toytec is either $800 or $900, depending if I go Bilstein or Boss. Icon is around $1200. You get what you pay for, right?!

As far as tires, I'm gonna get a bit more agressive tires, but will probably stick to AT and not Mud tires. Size wise, I'm sticking with 265/70/17. I like how the TRD Pro looks with 265s. There's so many good tire brand options though, it's hard for me to choose one over the other. For example, Nittos are a bit cheaper than KO2, and ultimately Toyota's 4R TRD Pro decided to go with the Nittos for, I'm assuming, plenty of logical reasons other than because the price was right. However, around here most people like the KO2 tires a whole lot, and if there was a survey they just might beat out the Terra Graplers.

So... I guess I haven't made up my mind. Help. Anyone?!

The reason why Toyota would never sell the KO2 on our trucks (any model) is because they are only made in LT construction (it would kill the gas mileage numbers and is overkill for 95% of buyers). The Nitto on TRD pro's is a passenger rated tire. So the question is do you want a P-rated tire or a LT rated tire. Only you can answer that based on your needs.

Go with the k02s in 265 and a good coilover. It is load range C so you will barely tell the difference. Done.

I ended up getting 5 Terra Grapplers g2 in 265. They look good. I'm happy with the size. I've driven them for 1.6 miles so not much to say :bolt:

Next are coilovers. There's this one from Icon but I don't know if it's too much for my once in a while off-roading necessities.
2010 - Current 4Runner Front Coilover Shock Kit - ICON Vehicle Dynamics

Any and all advice is welcome.

New to the 4runner world

Aloha all, I bought a 2016 4runner SR5 2WD for my wife so we figured we'd join this organization. We've admired Toyota's for long time but never owned one, till last year. It has exceeded our expectations, Great buy!

Awesome thread on changing tire size or wheels, Read this first! I don't fully understand some but overtime, I will.

The 4R is my wife's daily driver (NO 4 wheelin) and we want to keep it simple but rugged. I'm thinking about putting a front leveling spacer (may be 1.5"- 2.5") and keeping the back stock (maybe, I don't know yet). Tires: BFG 275/70/R17 (I don't know yet).

I've been doing a lot of research but haven't decided on what to buy. Any suggestion on what leveling kit to buy and what tire size fits good?
Thanks!

With a stock vehicle, I was told by a very reputable dealer that it is fine to go up 1 size of stock/manufacturer recommended tire size and be fine without rubbing issues, even when you air down. I've always stuck to that and when it is getting time to replace tires, I see which size tire I can get the best deal on. I have stock 16" aluminum rims and run 265/75 R16 tires. It leaves plenty of sidewall for riding in rocks. It is a good balance of sidewall and rim and I can find plenty of tires to fit. I keep it simple and I'm happy!

Tire Sizes, Etc.

I am into my fourth 4Runner, this time 2015 4WD SR5, with options, etc.

Going for a 2018, trading this one, trade value considered here, I will just match everything, it has 42 K miles on o do, ordered new, as all of them.

In 2008, drove from the dealer straight to the Michelin dealer, I always use
LTX/MS. I had them move the tire size up one level, same bolt pattern.
Headed to I-95, going out of town, 42 miles on the odo.

Vibration at 62 mph up to cruising speed, 78 mph, don't go any faster then that. Called the Michelin dealer, he said come back. Returned, took to back, half hour later, blamed it on the tech. I left again, same thing, no change.
Called them, said I would come back on return trip. Real bummer.

Week later, back to the shop. When there, discussing this issue, another guy was behind the counter, old dude, he asked me if the new Michelins were the same size as from the factory. I say, no, he says, thats your problem.

i am not the expert on tires, except with tolerances, computer road force balancing, etc., best to leave it alone. They changed to factory specs, new Michelins, hit the highway, problem solved.

that guy is lying to you, changing the size isn't why they couldn't balance them, you can balance non-factory size tires

Thanks, good reply, you are probably right. I don't think it was a balancing issue, something to do with dynamics.

Check with local Toyota dealer, they did understand. Most folks do not realize what they are feeling, they just drive.

Excellent write up!!! Some really great information in there that I have seen pieces of all over the place. Nice to have it all consolidated.

Wondering if anyone has a bit more information on gearing though. I have only ever had two vehicles re-geared.

On my Wrangler TJ, I re-geared to the suggested ratio (4.56 if I recall correctly) for my inline 6 with 33's and to be honest I was super disappointed in the returns. There was a slight uptick in power response but not much.

On my Dodge Dakota, I re-geared to the suggested ration (4.10's I think) for 4.7L V8 and 33's and it made an enormous difference. It was like a different truck!

I am wondering if it would be beneficial down the road to re-gear the 4R. I only went to 285/70's but even stock I was disappointed in the power of the 4R. Would a re-gear help responsiveness even though you say it is not required?

And would you see more of a difference as you pack on the weight to the 4R? Eventually I plan to have full skids, CBI rear swing-out bumper, sliders, full roof rack, slimline front bumper with winch, dual batteries, etc. All that extra weight will surely bog down the power even more and I am wondering if a re-gear would help to offset that?

Hey do you have any rubbing problem with you 285/70/17 tires?
I'm planning to get those for my car next, wondering if I need a body mount chop or not. I'm also running toytec ultimate lift ,3" in the front and 2" in the back

Any thoughts on Lt vs P? Looking at the Falken's but I'm not sure if an E rated tire is just a huge over kill.

I run LT tires because I 4 wheel and pull a trailer. I like the stiffer sidewall to handle the added weight on the vehicle when trailering, and it also to helps in braking. I also want a snow flake rated snow tire to get me to the mountains to go skiing. Otherwise, I might go with P rated tires to save weight and have a smother, softer ride.

Will i have a problem with these wheels?

6 x 139.70mm Single Bolt Pattern/Offset: -12mm / Backspacing: 4.00"
17"x8"

I'll be using 275/70/17 BFG Ko2 with a 3inch lift on 5th gen.

Woah super helpful! I've been trying to get a clear answer to questions like this for a while. Thank you!
