Just bought another Toyota....

A pic of the soon to be "classic" yotas. The Celica turned 15 years old this month! Why can't Toyota make cars and trucks like these anymore!

Love the pic! I own a 98 SR5 4X4 V6 Auto Desert Dune and I just bought a Red 2001 Celica GT 5spd(with 70K miles)as my DD.

I was looking for a GTS, but when this one popped up, I couldn't pass it up, really its in amazing condition--- garage kept and it only spent one Winter on the road...wow!

Anyways, I was looking for a good diff breather mod, because today I launched my boat at a new launch and the rear end was totally under the surface... I should have done this mod long ago... any advice?

I broke my E-Brake cable today It just snapped when I pulled up to push the button. Hopefully, I will be going to the junkyard with my friend on Wednesday. Back to studying!


Oh yeah, I installed my rear diff. breather extension last Friday. I just tucked it up over the frame, but will put it with the gas tank filler neck when I get a chance.

Can you provide more detail on what you did and what part you used for the breather, ie the same stock one and what you threaded into the diff?.... did you use 3/8" fuel line?

I met my first fan! He is also a student at TTU and has followed my build since I started! I was shocked haha

The locker works great! I wish I could have disconnected my front sway bar, but I couldn't get the nuts of due to rust caused by the salt from last month.

I'm a fan! You should be really proud of the work you've done to your 4Runner, from what I've seen, as I work through your thread! I have 3 sons between 18-23, and the only one that's taken an interest in fixing his car is my 20 yr old---- he bought a Mits Eclipse and we rebuilt the rear suspension and installed rear disc brakes(the car is a GS 4 cyl and came with drums), rebuilt the fronts, POR15 (rust remediation) the underbody and removed the front end and POR15 everything, replaced the oil cooler, some body work, and TB/WP... now he wants to sell it and get a 4th gen Eclipse with a V6! At least all the work we did this Spring gave me an excuse (for the Wife) to add to my tool collection! I was able to buy a press to do the bushings! Were they ever a @#$itch to remove! BUT the car handles like new! Maybe my 4Runner will get new front bushings next Spring when I do the ITRE's.... Unfortunately my new(to me) Celica needs nothing... Come to think of it, I may do the clutch this Fall...

Anyways, great work and great truck!!

I don't remember what size hose I used for the breather- I just got whatever looked right at advance auto.

I actually used a small in-line fuel filter for a lawn mover spliced in the hose when it's near the frame. I ran the hose behind the driver's side tail light with a little breather thing from a vacuum switching valve from the junkyard on the end.

Toyota Part # 90930-03136 - Breather Plug
couple o' small hose clamps
3/8 id hose, maybe 5 or 6'
zipties to zip the hose to the gas tank filler

I used the fuel filter because the stock breather cap only allows air flow out of the axle. The filter allows both ways. Even if the breather is extended with the stock style breather cap and the axle gets cold from being submerged in water, the water will still try and suck in through the axle seals.

Okay, I'm getting what you're saying. Something I hadn't thought of, thanks. Now I gotta go pull the breather and test that, because curiosity tastes terrible!

Thanks Habanero, for the parts list. I'll definitely start with the union fitting. I came across a post from the 5th gen forum where the guy brought his breather to the fuel pipe and brought the breather out next to the gas tank filler port. I don't really like the idea of drilling a hole there, so maybe placing the breather right up to where the fuel pipe goes through the quarter panel will suffice.
Chuckles resourcefulness is refreshing and interesting! Any one with interest can be successful wrenching, given enough money or where money is no object, but its truly the guys that do it with ingenuity and improvisation that come up with great ideas that teach all of us!

That's for your reply, bringing the breather up to the tail light is a good idea. I was thinking of the fuel filler but if the tail light is more accessible, I'll do that. I did see someone (maybe Dirtco) used an inline filter on his front diff extension to the firewall and I believe he used it also as possibly a clean reservoir (the line is probably more than sufficient for this), due to the notable expansion and contraction of the synthetic fluid he used... several guys have noted a little leakage from the front after a fluid change, followed by a demanding trip.

Back shortly after I bought my 4R in 2012, I had a rear axle seal failure. I'm not sure whether a blocked breather was the reason (or age) but I replaced the seals, removed the breather and cleaned and checked it. At the time I considering adding an extension, but I moved on to something else, and never got around to it. I guess it's never too late---- maybe I'll Rustoleum the diff while I'm at it...

That's where mine is, by the fuel filler. It's a rubber gasket so no drilling. I started out putting it just behind the gasket but it got really gunked up even up in there. Has been free and clear ever since behind the fuel door.
I like the behind the taillight idea, can't remember a time I've pulled them that there's been excessive dirt back in there.

Hab - that is a good idea, easy to route. I think i will do that on my 94.
