A buddy of mine and I led one of the Cliff Hanger runs year before last at Cruise Moab and we had a brand new Tacoma without sliders in the group and got him through without so much as a scratch (and Cliff Hanger is a b!tch).......so with good spotting someone without sliders should be OK.

I've had 2 Toyota crawlers over the years and have crushed the rocker panels on each one. It is so frustrating because repairing them is not easy. Sliders are cheap insurance, IMHO...and allow you to drive with more confidence.

So welding to the frame doesn't weaken it in any way?
The guy who would be welding them for me, happens to think so.
My 5 yr old would be able to climb into the truck easier, too..

On my trip to Moab in my 89 I commented to Al on the 3rd day that I had not even scraped my sliders. There were a couple of times were I thought for sure they would be scraping along the terrain, but nothing.

Then out of nowhere at about 15mph through a trail that had rocky side I hit my driver side slider so hard that the truck jolted passenger side. Had that simple slider set from Low Range Off Road not been there I am sure I would have never gotten all the damage fixed. As it was, I didn't even have to touch up the POR-15 that I had coated them in.

Point being, get them, use them and be happy that for less than $200 you are saving a huge headache that can come out of nowhere! Welded to the frame is the way to go.

I'm pretty sure the set from Low Range Off Road are all Trail Gear made, they just don't put the info in the manufacture spot.

One way to be sure not to weaken anything is to put an additional plate where the slider tube meets the frame--you weld the plate to the frame, then weld the slider to the new plate. This way you spread the load of the tube across a larger section, greatly reducing the chance of distorting the frame rails under load.

I'll be modifying some simple square tube and welding it under the Sammy. Some protection is better than none.

I think my friend said that because he was a diesel mechanic and worked on heavy equipment, think I read somewhere the heavy duty trucks' frames are heat treated or something, and welding to the frame weakens it or soomething -shrug- I will tell him these lil trucks can handle some welding
