COB's 4Runner Timeline (Pic Heavy)

You're right, I should go down to my 4Runner, drive to So. Cal, break into his 4Runner, hot wire it, and check his options to see his firmware version.

Let me take your foot out of your mouth for you, Genius.

I suppose you could do that instead, but I was thinking it would be easier to follow the link I gave you. Then you could find your firmware version is outdated and update it without bothering COB...or break into his 4Runner and getting yourself beaten.

Genius out :toilet:

Good luck with the repairs and cleanup man! BTW, not sure if you're interested, but I find the easiest way to clean grease off of cloth, is to spray it with WD40 and a light scrub with a laundry brush.

You can go the extra and spray a mixture of Laundry detergent and water to give it a cleaner smell, and then rinse with a small amount of water. I use a Wet Vac to suck up the water as it's being applied.

Sounds a little messy, but I promise, the way I do it... it is not. Check out my build thread for the after pics.

http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/65845-fightmans-build-thread-44.html

My carpet and driver side seat had some grease spots, and the back seat had 3% Milk stained onto it as well......

COB, sad to see your are taking a respite from working on that truck. As others have mentioned, your Runner is more like Runner of the Century, as opposed to Runner of the Month!

It appears that you will have your hands full working to get that Probe running though!!

Good luck, I look forward to watching everything come together.

Hey COB, I know your this post about the sifter seat bushing is pretty old, but I'm wondering if, in addition to the bushing, is there some sort of other gasket that goes in there to keep gear oil from sloshing out? I'm pretty sure it's not the square base gasket that is under those 4 bolts that's leaking, but I still got caked on grease all over the top of my transmission and case. The small shifter boot is not the only thing that keeps the oil from sloshing out, right?

Thanks for the great advice, fightman. Your interior looks flawless! I'll be happy if mine is half that clean.

 Thanks buddy! Guys like you make this forum as awesome as it is. Such a pleasure to hear your feedback.

It appears to me that the square gasket and rubber boots are all that hold in the fluid. I used some Permatex non hardening Form-A-Gasket to help seal better, seems to be working.

My Transmission was leaking from that spot when I got the donor truck, so it may just be a common problem for 5-speed trucks.

Latest news regarding my 4Runner:

Fixed transmission leak. Shifter seal bolts backed out a little which allowed fluid to spill out. Torqued and sealed!

Repainted sliders. I've decided to hold off on purchasing Outdoor Logic Boatsides, simply because I have too many other financial commitments for the time being.

Done. The sliders dried for a total of 30 minutes before these pics. I accidentally stepped on one to get in the truck, the paint :lmao:laughed:lmao: at me as it remained spotless. The Krylon flat back I had used before was no match, scuffing even after multiple days of drying. Also took care of the rear bumper scrapes. While I didn't do much preparation at all, SEM Trim Black has blown my mind. After some light sanding to remove the surface rust, there's literally no difference in color between SEM TB and black powdercoat. I'm so far very pleased, SEM has made a repeat customer of me.

Probe update to follow, couldn't fit it all in one post.

In other news, you fine members of this glorious website may recall a truck crash back in May 2010. That truck is owned by my failure/idiot brother. A project that should have taken less than one month, stretched out across two years.

That stupid truck... it was owned by my father who used to daily drive it. When my idiot brother got hold of it, he riced it out with chrome, primer, useless billet crap everywhere, and suede. I really only liked one of the modifications on it, the 2nd gen 4Runner front end. This latest front end being the 3rd 4Runner front end that he's destroyed.

My brother, let's call him Tattles, rear ended a Honda Accord while speeding through traffic on the 55 North, just past the 73 South entrance. It was 100% his fault. The truck was transported to the garage, where our 2005 C230 resided.

So, while jobless Tattles didn't fix his piece of junk, I managed to convert my 2WD 4Runner to a 4x4 5spd, and buy another car with a blown motor/pull the motor/rebuild a new one.

May 14th, 2010, crash day.

August, 2010. Notice the new primered shelving unit to the left of my 4Runner.

Castrol Edge Contest video. Notice the first scene, I walk out of my garage. Guess what Toyota Statue is still there.

Many months later, CBI install. Notice the reflection in my tail gate.

First day I worked on Donor Truck... you can see it peeking between the open door and b pillar.

After 4WD conversion, after supercharger, after soooooo many things... IT'S STILL THERE!

It sat in my garage for 1 year and 11 months. The worst part of it - he took money from our parents to "repair the truck to operable condition" (billet overflow tank? Optima battery mount? GM alternator? $$POR-15$$ in Sunny CA on a rust free truck? wtf?). It still isn't finished, and will likely not be finished for months... if not years to come.

(notice excessive fossilized dust buildup)

THE GARAGE IS FREE FOR OTHER VEHICLES!

What a pleasure to have my garage back. I can finally work on things again, starting with this. It's a $500 beater project my friend and I are going to rebuild.

Hey I know your a huge fan of this sem trim black paint. If i recall you used it on your flares? How has it held up on them? Any fading? Looking into painting them and this seems to be the best route at the moment. Thanks

Great updates C.O.B! Any chance you can take a pic of the can for the paint?? I'd be interested in finding some here locally..... and maybe doing my rear bumper pad with it....

Nice updates. I really need to look into this SEM paint soon haha. Did you paint your SR5 flares with the SEM already? They look good in those pics.

Ya SEM paints are urethane based just like what any professional paint shop would use. So they are ten times more durable than something you get from Rust oleum, dupli color, krylon, etc

Hey COB, I've been reading through your thread and I can't believe how much work you've done to your rig. I'm a noob myself, but because of this forum, I believe I've built my rig in the correct way, from the inside out, including addressing all maintenance concerns. I'm in the process of blacking out my rig and I'm going to give this SEM TB paint a try, especially on the chrome bumpers.

Experienced members like you have repeatedly pointed me in the right direction. Just one example is the SS 1.2 A Kit I just installed. I wouldn't have even known to look for it without this forum. I'm definitely addicted now. Keep up the great work!

P.S. I also noticed you're in the OC area. I'm here for family reasons and this is definitely the land of the mallcrawler, though I recently heard the term brodozer, which is my new favorite.

OC= Land of the Brodozer!

One thing to note though ... James used the higher quality SEM paint called "trim" paint. It is much better than their baseline paint and costs about $13 per can vs $3.

So just be sure you get the $13 one. I have used the cheap $3 SEM and it faded in 3 months.

EDIT: well I guess it is more like $13 a can + shipping.

TCP Global is a major vendor and their store is actually in San diego near Miramar ave.

$3 and $8? The can I bought was almost $20 and like I said is urethane based. So apparently they sell different paints. The cheap stuff is probably latex based

Hey COB, excellent thread. I'm surprised and enlightened every time I engage in it's awesomeness!

On a side note, is your CBI the "wider" version for the flares or the standard one??

Thanks

The flares are still coated with Plastidip and clearcoat. They're fading lightly and the plastidip is ripped up and peeling in a lot of spots.

I will be repainting them with the SEM paint and I am confident they'll last much longer than the Plastidip.

Are you gonna paint that Ford? Or sell it as is?

Yeah, painting it using the same paint as my wheels. The trim will all be blacked out, along with whatever wheels I find for it.

COB I just watched the Castrol video. You totally went baja 500 at the end! That was that awesome!!

Funny tidbit, after the first jump, you can totally hear my transmission change into neutral with a loud rev. Haha thanks dude, glad you liked it.

Here ya go:

Just an FYI if you've never painted the back bumper pad, it's prone to flexing a lot and may crack a hard top coat. I haven't tried the SEM, I doubt it will crack like Krylon did... but who knows. Good luck man.

No substitute for garage space when working on your ride. Glade you got that thing outta there.

:) You're absolutely correct, no substitute! Thanks buddy!

I just read up on urethane based paint, wow, thanks for this information! I'll be sure to choose strictly urethane based from now on.

First of all, thank you! Everyone starts somewhere, sounds like you're well on the right track. I think you're set using this SEM on the chrome bumpers. According to SEM, Trim Black "offers maximum adhesion even on stainless steel and chrome."

Man, Orange County is a weird place. Tons of sweet capable rigs, but easily ten times more Brodozers :P Hahaha.

Where in OC are you staying?

COB, I heard you were putting a Fabtech drop bracket lift on your truck

Right after the 3" body lift and 26" KMC Rockstars! Leaving the back stock, going for the Ranger look. Will go great with the 2 foot FOX and SKIN stickers all over the back windshield. Thanks dudemanbronattylight

:thumb3: Thanks for clarifying that. Didn't know they made cheaper paint.

Thanks

Thank you!

My CBI is neither the skinny or wide version. I asked them to bring in the wider version 1 1/2" on both sides to match my SR5 flares. It's still slightly wider than the non-flare version (at least, the non-flare version at the time I bought mine, they may have changed their designs).

Are you thinking of picking one up?

The motor has been done for a few days. Check it out: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/all-other-vehicles/118959-cobs-89-pgt.html#post1108541
