COB's '94 Supra Turbo

One thing that was getting on my nerves was the downpipe. Every speed bump, every time, it hits. I eyed a Megan downpipe on craigslist for a while until the ad went down.

A couple weeks later, someone else posts the exact same pipe up for sale. The guy had it in his Supra for a couple miles and took it back out.

$100 and no more BS sounds good to me. I took it over to an exhaust shop to have them weld a new section plus a flange for the HKS Super Drager catback to bolt right up to the downpipe. They also welded in my O2 sensor bung for the wideband, so that's finally functional now.

The strut bar was contacting the throttle cable bracket, thus I removed it and trimmed a bit off the top.

The old Fluidyne cap has seen better days. It's been starting to leak from the rubber seal, so time for a new cap. Stant 10233 16lb caps are recommended by Fluidyne.

I've bumped the boost pressure up to 17 PSI now, which the wideband still shows as rich at full throttle. The fuel system in this car is pretty damn impressive. I've gotten a bit carried away with the power... the rear tires don't like it. TRAC OFF, shifting into 2nd spikes the boost up to 17 and spins the rears into smokey oblivion. After adjusting the tread to 0/32, the sucker kicks out like a mule now. Needs more grip!

Continental decided to discontinue the tires I have, the ExtremeContact DW, which means all old inventory went on sale. Good time to get some wider tires on the cheap!

The front tires were good on tread, but considering how cheap the discontinued price is, I figured might as well get some new ones. I used part of the difference to get some 25mm spacers for the front. I went with 235/45/17 because testing 255's resulted in too much rubbing.

I learned how to do mounting and balancing myself using the equipment at work, to avoid having to pay the BS $20 a tire at America's Tire. Afterwards, I got the car aligned at a local shop.

The front looks astronomically better spaced out.

Great pictures! I really love the Supra.... wait, I love the classic 4R.... wait,I love the 3rd gen!! We have lots of RHD's here. Importing isn"t hard. Lots of Skylines and a few Supras... AND Hilux Surfs.

I wish we, in BC, had endless Summer like yourself--- I envy your ability to work in such a dry climate... shoving everything to the corner of the garage to get the vehicles in to work on them sucks, AND having to pre-heat the garage, also sucks!!

Interesting tidbit, I found out a couple of weeks ago, that Rickashay's old 4R is now owned by a co-worker!

I thought I'd also provide a pic of my 4R from a couple of days ago when the sun came out briefly...

If you find a deal like COB, that's one thing, but check out supraforums, people want 40K for these things and Toyota has discontinued a huge number of parts for them... Id never want to spend 30k plus on a car that will require finding a unicorn every time it needs work.

If you find a deal like COB, that's one thing, but check out supraforums, people want 40K for these things and Toyota has discontinued a huge number of parts for them... Id never want to spend 30k plus on a car that will require finding a unicorn every time it needs work.

I have to agree - if you're a really skilled DIY-er, and you score a really good deal, and have the time and money, it's fun. You get an extremely rare vehicle, with [still] great looks, and it's a neat part of automotive history.

However, if you're shopping a lower mileage, later model like a '97/'98 with the nice revisions, (especially in a 6M), the premium is so high, you'd have to _really_ put a significant amount of value in the exclusivity. Being ~20 years old, it doesn't have nearly the chassis rigidity, electronics, etc., of more modern performance vehicles.

The JZ2/V160/161 combo is pretty bullet proof, but you'll wind up chasing down a lot of other issues on a ~19-24 year old, very driven, multi owner vehicle with some part supply issues.

I don't want to sound negative, for those folks who really want to own one, go for it, just be aware of the potential pitfalls.

To the OP: killer progress, I love seeing cars, especially something unique like the Supra, get back on the road, in new like condition!

Spread the love man! haha. I'm sure it would be just the same shock if I went to live where you are. Sure, the sun's not out destroying things with UV rays, but there's such a whole different world once moisture and low temperature kicks in. Frankly, it frightens me.

It's surreal. I could never have had this car without waiting many years, had I not gotten lucky. Some really good stuff will be coming this year! I'm saving up for something good.

I doubt you'd say that if you owned it. Parts for these things are everwhere if you've got the money. I haven't had much of an issue (if at all) finding things. Finding them cheap, though, that's another story. For 40 grand, a Supra better damn well be flawless.
It's a pretty satisfying feeling blowing the doors off of cars worth well over 40k. My Supra isn't taking out Lamborghinis (yet), but it sure as hell isn't slow. I have a few kill videos, but they're most certainly not for the internet! Mustangs, Corvettes, AMG Mercedes, scores of other imports, and a few crotch rockets. Keep in mind mine has stock turbos still! Just wait until it's got a single turbo, FMIC, bigger fuel injectors/pump, and meth injection!

My parking spot at work since 2008.

The car has been having some issues with the negative battery terminal. Poke around my garage and you'll find enough to keep you busy for weeks. The solution was 1/0 gauge wire and a new terminal.

Old cable and terminal:

1/0 gauge terminal attached via hydraulic crimper.

1/0 ground strap to chassis added. This isn't a permanent setup and I do eventually plan to relocate the main battery to the trunk alongside the spare wheel. It will be a different size battery (or two). It certainly works great in the meantime though.

Pulled out the rear carpet to take a look around. Removed a lot of random previous owner trash, found some new spots to fit my mini air compressor, and located a missing part of the targa holder. Pretty stoked about that last part.

Rotella T6 oil change, first since the cam break in.

Back to the 5 speed swap. My plans to rebuild my R154 (the one in the garage) have been replaced, with this. I got this thing from a Lexus Tech who went another route with his project. I'll use my 1JZ bell and shifter extension on this one.

0 miles. R154 with marlin crawler upgrades.

New bearing retainer
Marlin Chromoly thrust washer
New driftmotion synchros
New shifter retainer housing, grommets, and gasket
New bell housing bolts
Input shaft like new
Energy Suspension polyurethane transmission mount from a Chevelle modified to fit R154

So much for that brand new rear bumper mounting bracket...

The impact even broke two filaments in my bulbs! I WANT COMPENSATION!!

The foam behind the bumper is broken in a few spots.

Bend in the tank skid also.

So, after the R154 swap and insurance comes through with a check, seems appropriate that this car gets repainted.

They say, you see what you want to see, right? I see them and I ask to buy them, and some time it works out lol.

IMO it's just a matter of one mans junk is another mans treasure. Gotta find the guys who don't care about them, but have something worth saving.
