Coil Rates: OEM 4runner, OEM FJ, Moog, & Others

I know the front coils are different, not sure on the rear. If you're in the market, I'd stick with 4wd coils to be safe.

I was never able to figure which ones we put on mine. Even if they were from a 2WD though I'm still happy w/ the results.

Seems people are having a harder time finding used FJ coils - I guess so many have already been sold, or have higher mileage. And now w/ discontinuation of the FJ Cruiser, this may no longer be a thing at some point.

So... I've been running Bilstein 5100's all around on my 07' V8 for a couple years now. Stock coils with 100k on them front is set at 1.75, in back I have a 1" spacer. Rake/stance is close to stock. I'm looking to freshen it up with new coils, I want a slight lift in the front and back with a little increase in stiffness and load capacity. Thinking the Eibach/Toytec coils up front with Bilstein's set at 0" and Sway Away 1.5 in the back? Going to add aluminum skid and a hidden winch in the near future.

What do ya'll think?

I don't know many that run the Toytec coils, so can't comment on those specifically. That said, I do know the OME coils would be a good fit for what you describe. The 885s give approx 3 inches of lift. You'll loose a little when you add the winch, my guess is you would net around 2.5" lift. That combined with the SAW rear coils, it'll be similar to what you have but just a little higher all around.

Your probably right on the OME's .I've run OME coils before... on the front they would be fine. But I think they ride too rough on the back of 4runners if you have normal weight back there, and most of the time I do. I'll probably just get the saws and adjust the front higher until I get the winch set-up. then get the appropriate coils. Thanks for the input.

Some rambling thoughts...
Thinking about piecing together some Rancho 9000 front struts.
I like the adj on the fly and the cheap price.

I am running the quickLift now for the last couple years but it is to soft after the Shrockworks bumper. Also I don't like to leave the winch on because of the weight.

I was thinking about the OME886 with the RS999777 (Tacoma strut).-edit- No Go. Coils are too long to fit these, would have to compress them 3" to fit. Coils are so stiff they are starting to bend my strut coil compressor at an inch.

Looking at the OME886 coils here in my garage they are 17.5mm thick, one is 16" and one is 16 1/8" tall.

I pulled apart the stock struts for parts and noticed that the coil springs are different length and different diameter.
Driver=16mm thick,13 5/8" tall
Passenger=15mm thick, 13 5/16" tall

Now I am wondering if one OME885 on the passenger side and one OME886 on the driver side might be an option for the 4leaner? Maybe to much difference in rates?
Has anyone tried this?

I have a 2008 2WD SR5 and just purchased the daystar 2.5/1.5 comfort ride lift. I have 120k miles on my ride and haven't replaced any of the factory suspension. Should I replace anything on it while I'm installing my daystar lift? I'm not looking to lift it up real high but want it to look level and be up high enough to put some 265/70/17 bfgs on with spidertrax spacers eventually. All suggestions are appreciated!

Thanks for compiling this! Do the V6 and V8 4Runners share the same OEM front coils?

Does anyone know if a similar thread exists somewhere for shock travel? Would be interesting to see min/max extensions + total travel comparisons.

Just curious..

Hi,

OP, do you still have a copy of the coil spring info that you posted? Photobucket is down so the image no longer shows. I'm in need of some info about coil springs and what I'm looking for may be in that list.

Thanks.

As a FYI ACDelco Professional Rear's do not fit correctly on the rear perch. They fit over it but do not sit flush so they pop when the axle articulates.

They also are very stiff. Uncomfortably so compared to my OE quality replacement front's

OME coil rates

I know this is an old post, but maybe my case will be useful for someone, I changed my rear suspension to OME 895e with OME shocks, I have no additional rear weight and the ride is terrible, with all my family in a lot of things in the cargo area you get a descent ride, but as this is my daily driver car my back was suffering.

I recently changed only the rear shocks with a bilstein 5100 and the ride has improved noticeable, it rides much smoother that are making me think to change the front as well.. currently in the front I have bilstein 5100 + FJ 07 coils.

Unfortunately, many people don't do their homework when shopping for new suspension, or they get given bad, uneducated advice. This is a perfect example. As you can see at the start of this thread, the 895e springs have a 44% increase in spring rate, so they're basically 44% stiffer than factory springs. Plus, OME shocks are valved to match the springs. Together, the system is designed for carrying a constant heavy load and are therefore going to be a bad choice for a daily driver unless you like a super firm ride.
You might be better off with the Wheelers T12 rear springs since they are closer to stock feel with only a small lift.

Love that this thread is still active. Let's keep it going.

2006 4wd 4runner here, planning on going with bilstein 6112s in the front and 5160s in the rear. I'm here to find out which rear spring would work best for me: stock weight most 95% of the time (daily driver). Loaded up with a Roof top tent, roof rack, and cargo for trailing and camping (no bumper, winch, etc). From what it sounds like, OME 895 will be too stiff (even thought this is what all the local shops are recommending in orange county..).

So now I'm looking at this chart and what others have said, and it seems like I should be considering Moog 81045s, Sway-a-Way 1.5s, All pro 2"s, Wheeler T12s (no info on these, but I've seen them recommended a few times in the forums), or Icons.

Does anyone have any comments on which of the above might work best for me?

Also considering adding a 1/2" cornfed spacer on the rear driver side to account for any lean that may present itself. My question here is... I don't notice any lean on my stock ride (104k miles), so why should I expect a lean to introduce itself with all new suspension components? Doesn't make sense to me.

Thanks for any input.

I’m running moog FJ springs in the rear with FJ trd pro bilsteins. It’s super harsh on speed bumps and off-road. It comes down with quite a thud and I’m guessing it’s due to the springs. Anyone else have this problem?

What shocks are running front/rear? Any lift?

I am looking to replace my xres suspension on my 03. I am planning on going with the 5100 struts all around and have just purchased some 2017 4runner springs (to replace my 100k mile stock springs) I run stock weight and 95% on the street, I am looking for a little lift (1-2" max) and would like a level stance. any advice on if I should just get some different springs or if i can use the 2017 4runner springs with some combination of spacers?

Thanks!

Yup, they are horrible. Please, noone buy these. theres not a single good thing about them. although the term harsh is often applied to coils that are too firm. the moog rear fj coils are just too soft.

The front moog fj 4x4 coils however feel great. theyre beefy.

If you were to do it all over would you just get the 5100's the MOOG front spring and then get something like a wheeler off road for the rear springs?

Ya, anything firmer for the back coils. The rear moog fj Im pretty sure are softer than stock. Right now when I hit a big bump on the highway I can see the nose lift cause the back squishes down so far. And Thats with zero load. The front stands strong but the rear sinks like a drunk in the deep end.

Next big help I'm in the process of is poly bushings for the sway bars. I think it will really help level it out over bumpy roads. I can see/feel the side to side. too much. My runner gets about 60 miles a day onroad, so I try to get it to perform best onroad while still retaining capability for trails, etc. No rock crawling here.

I got the moog front 4x4 fj springs off amazon for like 25 bucks with free shipping. It was crazy, it was a damaged box.
