Cold Air Intake

I am new to the forum, so apologies if this has been covered for the 5th Gen 4runner, but has anyone installed CAI and if so, what have the results been in terms of power/mileage?

I just bought a 2012 limited and I am looking into easy/cheap mods to increase HP without losing mileage.

It's been covered. Many running TRD or aFe both of which are sealed. A few running the K&N which is open to the engine bay. Pretty much you get a little bit of noise and a nicer looking engine bay.

I myself run the aFe because it is sealed and easier to change the filter versus the TRD. Both are nice though.

While I prefer replacing the intake with either a TRD of aFe (which I have) you can get close to the same results and save some coin by installing a K&N air filter and removing the extra filter card in the air box.

Are you talking about a K & N Drop in filter? And what do you mean about removing the extra filter card in the air box? Can you be/provide more detail. Thanks

Yes, a K&N drop in filter. I don't have any pics of the filter card but when I replaced my stock air box with the aFe, there was a permanent anti-back flow filter in the stock air box. Removing it will increase air flow. I don't think it's CARB legal to remove but if you don't live in CA...

i did the K&N CAI, yes its a bit noisier, which i prefer, and as stated above its open to the bay vs the afe or trd. Nominal changes in gas mieleage (i noticed more when i towed), you won't feel much for the power difference. Maybe a little more throttle response (in my head?). If you're not ok with the sound, just replace the stock filter with a K&N drop in. I have a thread somewhere on here for my K&N Install

GrantK, I see what you meant by the anti-back flow filter. It's integrated in the top lid of the air box correct. Did you just detach it carefully? I would assume it could be just replaced if needed or resecured with some 3M trim tape. I would think that would increase airflow pretty well baring drilling holes in the air box. Any ill effects from doing this? Thanks

As I mentioned in my first post, I have an aFe system. I'm just giving you an optional way of increasing air flow based on what I saw when I replaced my air box with the aFe system. How to mechanically implement it is up to you.

GrantK is referring to the charcoal filter. I removed mine as well and cut a big glorious hole in my airbox to boot.

Antman, ya I'd say that is one bigg whole. I thought I was crazy drilling holes in my air box in past vehicles I've owned but you win. If I was going to go that extreme I'd get another air box to chop up. But removing the charcoal filter looks like a simple unnoticeable way to get more air to the motor.
On my 3rd gen, I went from having a K & N and drilling holes in the box to a K & N CAI. But the 3rd gen really benefited from that since it had no HP. This would be perfect for a 5th gen as it's got more balls than the 3rd gen did.
