Yes a full stainless steel version will cost close to that. There is always the cheaper option of using carbon steel
That's a cool design that Fold-A-Flame came up with. I guess I fail to see how your's isn't anything more than a direct copy of the CoalBee, other than you may be using stainless steel.
Companies come up with great ideas every day only to have someone else come in and steal their intellectual property because they can make it "cheaper" and "make a buck". Come on man - improve on the concept, make it unique, differentiate the product - don't just copy something. Bring some value.

I agree with you and I debated posting on here about this product. The only reason I did this is that I loved the product but could not afford it.
Your thinking is valid, but you can say that about anything. Thats why we have 20 different car companies, 20 different phone companies. They all makes the same product. Thats how you keep it competitive.
I have taken a product and made it more accessable with a few changes. The final product is not xomplete yet.
I guess this is a touchy subject and you can debate both sides

You purchased the bag from eBay and two grills from fold-a-flame? Why are there two different grills pictured?

Well this one is more robust and would last much longer than the one you are showing from amazon.
Plus i think it is cooler and bigger.

OK to DIY on this, I'm not handy but did it anyway
I first saw something similar over 2 years ago, prior to Fold A Flame coming out. The design seems to be popular in Australia, but could not find a company selling it in the USA.
Somebody in Australia had posted a design/specs of their DIY version, using carbon steel, and I gave it a try. Used a carbon blade on my circular saw for the main cuts, and cleaned it up with an angle grinder.
1/8" carbon steel, 26" long, 11" high. Yes, it WILL rust. I don't care, it was $70 worth of steel and is covered in soot all the time
Stainless steel would have been $150, and harder to cut.
Since I took this picture, I've also drilled a bunch of 1/3" holes in both ends to enhance air flow/make a cleaner burn.
I have been looking for a cheapo grill grate to put on top for cooking purposes, but mainly I built this for trips to Anza borrego where you can't have a fire right on the desert floor.
Even at 1/8" thick, the firewood burns hot enough to create a very slight warp, so I'm not sure I would trust a thinner gauge of steel.
Not responsible for any fires or lost fingers that result in DIY!
