Constant 12V power from the fuse box (For 04 limited 4R with compass) 1 of 4

This is a my first mod write up.

First, I wanted to have a constant 12v for my cell,PDA and Bluetooth GPS so I was going to do a mod that kmvreter's constant 12v by using a 2 - 1/4" blade male connectors and a short piece of wire. But I found out that by doing this, auto-dimming mirror/w Compass stays on for a 24-7 ( I have a 04 Limited 4R). I did not like the idea that the compass is on all the time (I know it uses very very little power ), I have decided to add a separate 12v constant on like what comi1 did by tapping into fuse box. My only question that I have is that is it ok to tap into a unnamed fuse box(relay) on Driver side J/B? Please someone answer this question. Thanks

<p>Now let's begin:</p>
<p>Difficulty: Easy </p>
<p>Time: About 30 min. or less to install and another 30min. to decide the location.</p>
<p>Tools that you need: </p>
<p>10mm nut driver/socket and a wire cutter. Screw driver, and a<em> COLD beer</em>. </p>
<p>Things that I bought: </p>
<p>Cig lighter sockets( 2sockets combined) just go to Walmart. Less than $10 </p>
<p>Mini Add-a-circuit (Canadian tire for me (I live in Canada) but I think Walmart sells it also) less than $15. </p>
<p>A washer + Ring terminal: $2 (need them to hold the ground wire) </p>

<p>PROCESS: </p>
<p>* Disconnect the Negative side(-)battery (I did not disconnect the battery but that is just me) </p>
<p>1) Just connect the cig light socket wire(black with white stripe) to the add-a-circuit fuse. The Cig lighter socket came with a 10A fuse so I was going to cut the fuse but change my mine because I did not want to have a short wire between fuse box to the center console. For the add-a-circuit fuse, I used 5A. I used less than 10A because it is easier to change from fuse box than 10A cig lighter fuse that located way inside. <br>

<p>2.Remove a driver ' s side scuff plate </p>

<p>3) Remove a foot rest *you really have to pull this hard! </p>

<p> 4)Remove a driver ' s side cowl cover. A plastic screw like objest. </p>

<p> Pull the cowl toward you. </p>

<p>5) Connect for the ground. </p>

<p>I was going to add the negativewire to already existed ground but somehow I could not unscrew. it was so tight that It actually broke my cheap wrench

<p>7)Connecting the positive made the cig lighter to work. I have connected the cell phone without turning the car key. After the verification, it took me almost 30 min. to decide where to put the socket. Deciding where to put the socket took more time than actually installing part!! </p>
<p>First I was going to put it next to the driver side center cup holder but it constantly hitting my right foot so I look for other places. At the end, I have decided to put it next to the passenger side cup holder. I let my wife suffer </p>
<p>**To open the center console part( look under <a href="http://www.castulucci.com/projects/carpc/oemnaviaccess/">http://www.castulucci.com/projects/carpc/oemnaviaccess/ </a> ) and wire it through the bottom.</p>

<p align="left">I have a Nano with a US Spec Ipod interface. I also have a bluetooth Hulox GPS slim connected to external antenna. My navigation, I use Tomtom5 with my Palm TX.</p>
<p align="left">Am glad that I did it? YES. It is simple and easy to do. </p>
<p align="left">For the reference only , if you want to tap into the rear cig lighter(v12) wire, it is located at IE1 and location is A9. Brown-Red wire. It is a useful if you want to add some electronic device on the back. </p>
