Countersteer Type X HELP PLEASE!!!

Ok. here is whats going on...

Went to dealer did my 10K service, everything was feeling great. Went to Tire World and had them put my stock tires (265x70x17) and TPMS on my brand new Konig Countersteer Type X rims (17x8, bore 110, -10 offset) with custom ceter caps (from the rim guy) and gorilla locks (from the rim guy). They balanced and installed them.

On the way home it felt weird, I wrote it off to rims being lighter and it being windy. The next day (Today) I was doing high speed driving and there was really bad speed wobbles at 50-60 (didn't feel safe going any higher) went back to tire world and asked WTF, they said there best balancer would be in tomorrow to see if redoing the balance would fix it. Also they said that it might need a hub spacer cuase the wheel and hub might not be 100% hub size wise(didnt think lug centric rims needed a 100% hub match).

This is my first new SUV, first set of aftermarket rims, and I only got 10K on the 4runner... I am asking for all that are smarter then me to give me some ideas of whats wrong and how to fix it so i can enjoy my SUV :(

If you need extra info not given PLEASE ASK!

Scenarios I have thought of... but could still use input.
1. lugs backing off (tried retourqing)
2. bad balance (going to check tomarrow)
3. needing a hub spacer (no one said anything about this till now)
4. custom low profile center cap not letting rim sit flush (not made by konig)
5. locks and cap after balance is effing up overall balance
6. need to do something (alignment?) to correct for wider rim that has a larger offest then stock (no rubbing from what I can tell)

Im freaking out here, dont like my baby eff'ed up! :ybrick:

PLEASE HELP!!!
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!!

If the aligment was fine before the install how could it get messed up just by putting new rims on? not arguing with you, just looking for insight. Want to aproch this with knowlege so it dont take forever to fix...

Does installing a 1" wider rim with a offest differance of .5" further out from stock, require an alignment at time of install?

Thanks

-clueless and hopeless lol

Take it to another tire shop that knows what they are doing. That hub size comment they made tells me they are incompetent.

Even though your truck is hub centric, the Konig wheelsand most aftermarket wheels, are lug centric and have to be balanced with the lug centric adapter. My guess is they used the hub centric adapter.

You did buy new conical seat lugs nuts as the oem ones will NOT work.

Yes , those are the right lug nuts.
They used the wrong adapter on the balance machine.
Happened to me once before too.Drove about a mile and took it back. They hire for muscle not brains at most tire shops and that's a given!

Sadly I have driven between 25-50+ miles like this and still have to drive 10-20 more miles to fix (have been advoiding speeds about 40)... what damage could I have done and what services do I need to DEMAND them pay for to correct any possible damage?

As always, you rock harper7!

I don't think any damage is done. You need to demand better balancing using the proper tools.

Harper is right, most "tire changers" are hired from the mouth down....

I'm running the same set of wheels as you and had the same issues. Past 50 mph there would be a slight judder. I took it back to the tire shop the next day and had them rebalanced. That fixed the problem :driving:

I am not familiar with the konigs, but does the center cap "push through"? or is it snap in?
American racings, some XDs, and others use a push through type center cap. This can impede with the hub of the truck. Basically, the flange of the center cap won't fit over the hub and will not allow the wheel to sit flush against the rotor.

FML!!!

so went back to Tire World and had them rebalance my wheels using a road force balancer... fixed 90% of the problem, pushed it to 80 and it wasnt anywhere close to how bad it was at 50 on the first balance... then i went to the dealer cuase they said they could lug centric balance it (wiling to pay for it just for peace of mind) but after having a staff meeting with the whole service department and finding out they cant do a lug job, we came to the conclution that they couldnt do a better job then what tire world did for me... got a hold of dustin(the only guy in the USA that can sell this rim) towards the end of the day. and he told me he uses a hub centirc balancer (didnt mention if it was a road force or what ever) with no issues but he recommends that the hub spacer be put on (dont work with the custom center caps) and only hand tighten lugs nutz with tourque wrench (no tourque stick) and go slow...he is sending me the plastic hub spacers...

but then i see this Video...Introduction to Hub And Lug Centric Balancing Techniques - YouTube

I dont know what to do... evertime i say lug centric people lookat me ike i got 4 heads... how do i find a place that will have the adapter?

i have been working at a tire shop close to ten years cut the guys some slack toyota wheels are the hardest to balance. We had to get a fingers set up that go in the stud holes so it will run true like it sits on the vehicle. Alignment is not the issue. Only way it would shake from front end issue is that something is worn out.

Yea the road force balancers should do the trick. I had a handful of places that either couldn't compute what the right weight was for each wheel + tires or a few places my wheel/tire combo actually broke the machine lol.

Finally found a place with a road force balancer and it somewhat did the job. I do get some crazy shakes at around 60mph, but thats due to my tires.

I don't think it would be a center cap problem, in my opinion those huge center caps don't look as good, I run mine without them.

The custom ones he gave me are nice (better then the konig ones) but if it comes down to caps and bad balance or running over my center caps and having a ring with a great balance, i will crush them all day long :(

I just checked the price on the rims ($800) and they're either unbelievably expensive, if the price is per rim, or very cheap, if it's for a set of 4.

Which is it?

set of 4 $800, $900 shipped.
9-10 lbs lighter per wheel then stock.
I LOVE THEM! ignoring above statements

Holy Crap...Did NOT know they are that much lighter than stock. I wonder what that translates into as far as rolling resistance and fuel economy??? (Cough...1engineer...cough)
