Cracked windshield

Hey guys,

I was driving back from SoCal to Las Vegas and a rock hit my windshield. It didn't seem that bad, but it put a sizable chip in my window. As I was driving the remaining 3 hours home, it grew to about 3 or 4 inches.

I've driven 3 cars before the 4runner and I have never broken a windshield. I have had instances where i had rocks hit my windshield with greater force and nothing happened.

Are 4 runner notorious for weak windshields? Is there anything I can do to protect my windshield from future instances (i.e. protective film)?

Look at the angle. It's more prone to damage due to this.

Yea I figured that since the 4runners have the aerodynamics of a brick wall, it would be more prone to damages, but i would have guessed that the people making the vehicle would have taken that into account and used stronger glass? :noidea: Not fun having to replace a windshield on your month old car.

Yeah it sucks but luck happens honestly.

Check with your insurance company. I only had to pay a $100 deductible on my last truck for a new windshield. It was different then a regular claim.

Yeah I think 0 deductible glass added 2 or 3 bucks a month to my policy for both cars. I've used it 3 times over the past 4 years. It's been nice.

Bought mine in January. On my third windshield. Luckily, March was crack free! :wacko:

the new vehicles made today have very weak windshields . they do crack even with a small chip . some have posted pictures of the glass with the small impact then the growing crack . not just toyota..

on old vehicles like 15 plus years old much more resistance to cracks with a small impact chip.

I believe its another reduce weight item on design.

I've replaced mine twice on the 4Runner in 5 years, on my previous SUV I averaged a new windshield once a year. Sometimes it's just bad luck.

ive had my replaced twice in a year now. the safelite guy said that 4runners tend to get messed up often due to the angle of the windshield, but wranglers are way worse

I just called my USAA insurance and they said window cracks would fall under "comprehensive" so I changed it from $300 deductible to $0 deductible. Looks like im paying out of pocket on this one but at least now I know that insurance will cover the windshield for from now on.

If you come back to socal go to Alameda St by florence ave. Its by Huntington Park and has cheap windshields. My 06 STI was about $80 to replace and my beater hondas have been about $50.

If your complaining about the 4 Runner glass be glad you don't have an FJ. I have one of each and go thru windshields like infants thru diapers. On the FJ i wait till the windshield is total junk before I change it out.

Same boat as op on deductible so paid guy my tire guy turned me on to 190$ & did it at my house !!

I feel your pain! Five days after purchasing my 2016 trail brand-new from the dealership I got hit by a rock and the crack quickly grew to about 6 inches long. Here in Arizona broken windshields are a very common thing. I am a technician at an Infiniti dealership so I decided to have our windshield guy that we use do the replacement because we have had zero problems with his install quality. We also requested OEM glass from my insurance company since the vehicle was brand-new. They had no problem with that. Zero deductible.

Of course, as things typically go for me, after the windshield was replaced my wife took it through the car wash and lo and behold it leaked water near the rearview mirror. So much for having the "best" guy do it. Apparently there was a bubble in the sealer.... anyhow it's fixed now.

Mine cracked last week. Drove home from work on Friday, got hit by a rock. Think to myself "it's not very big, I'll get this fixed tomorrow". Wake up next morning, ~6" crack. Fast forward another week, it's now ~10" long. Cost to fix is lower than my deductible so out of pocket for me. The longest I've ever owned a car is about three years and this will be the first windshield I've ever had to replace.

How much does $0 deductible raise your premiums?

Came out to about $10 a month difference, but this includes all damages that are not considered a collision with another auto vehicle (i.e. deer, hail, rocks, etc).

A 3-4" crack can be repaired. It won't be totally invisible but it will prevent it from spreading.

Mine got chipped by a rock back in January, and a few minutes after I got home it had turned into a crack. By the time I looked up the name of a reputable windshield chip/crack repair shop, it had grown to about 8" long. Cost me about $80 to fix it, but it's much less visible and isn't spreading.
