Custom Airbox

I would have posted this in the "performance Zone" but thats become the tire zone so since its a 4th gen in question i'll post here.

What are your thoughts on a custom airbox for a 4.7? I've thought about doing this for a while now and may move forward with it. So with that said do yall have any ideas on what makes a good airbox good? What i mean is design aspects or things they got wrong in your opinion. I want to make an insulated one but past that need to take a better look at where all i can capture the air.

What do you think and do any of you have any stock air boxes or hose to the engine you want to donate to the cause. Just PM me.

You can avoid all of the guess work by installing a Volant CAI. It definitely adds power and sound. (The improved gas mileage claims have not proven true for me.)

IIRC, JA had a writeup on his site that showed how to build a custom airbox, but for some reason I cannot find it right now. Maybe someone else can find the link, but I'm fairly sure that it has been done before and documented on here.

Agreed, i like stock because it gets the air from the fender, doesnt let the mud and dirt i go thru alot of into the engine. I find my engine has enough power for me, i want it to stay clean and healthy instead. The inside of the engine is, after all, the only part i dont get muddy. If you never go offroad however, k&n, volant, and trd all make excellent designs. Custom idea would be to put in a k&n dropin filter and cut holes in the lower portion of the airbox.

Maybe cut some holes in the airbox, drop in filter, and put some sort of fine mesh over those holes...? That way you can make sure the "big" pieces of dirt, leaves, etc. don't make it into the filter.


btw, off topic, but what brands/companies sell aftermarket filters that are dry, I wanted to try something other than the $10 cheapie, while not having to oil/clean the drop in.
