Cutting FJ Shifter Knob to fit the T4R

I originally tried this, (I used a pencil eraser not a bolt) and as it turns out the plastic threads inside the knob need to be screwed in pretty far to be strong. My 5 year old kicked the shifter stepping over the center consol (very lightly) and it ripped the treads out of the know because it was only being half by about a quarter of the intended threads.

That said, I got the eraser idea from another member who has been rocking it for a long time with no issues.

I don't see how that is possible, but maybe since the eraser could compress it was not binding the threads properly. There are still many turns on the threads with this technique ~15-20 I would guess. I could not pull it off If I tried. I don't remember the exact length I ended up with for for the spacer, but it seems like it was about 15mm or so. You just have to carefully make sure it ends up going in vertically aligned with the shifter rod. It is rock solid and only took me about 20min to install.

Sounds like your spacer worked better than mine. I would guess the eraser is only 19-20mm tall. Perhaps it was too tall.

This is also a good option, if you do not want to mess with cutting the shifter and don't mind the little extra height. Thanks.

So I got an inch today to do something, so I followed [MENTION=91521]GD2013[/MENTION] idea and put a Glock insert into my shifter knob.

It was a pain, required drilling a 3/4 hole with a paddle bit, then black epoxy followed by a ton of sanding and finally some buffing.

After hitting it with some 3000 grit, I used some compound on my buffing wheel to smooth it all up..... It's a little shiny, but it's one if a kind.

I had to do a quick update. My steel spacer ~13mm worked for a month or two but it failed yesterday and the shifter started spinning. It would not pull off.., but it spun and felt cheap. I guess the threads in the knob started to slip. Not sure if they are plastic or just a soft metal (since you can't see them).

Anyway, I removed the spacer and made the entire shifter shorter using the technique described in this thread and it is holding good again. Live and learn.

just messing with you. The threads are plastic and as such they need to be threaded all the way in or they will pull out. Someone on here did it the way you did with the tundra TRD knob and they ended up using epoxy when the threads failed.

Curious as to why everyone likes the FJ knob? That is one of the first things I did to my FJ when I had it. Looks like a big dildo to me. Although the cut down version looks considerably better.

if you have a Trail Edition, the FJ shift knob matches the transfer case lever perfectly. it genuinely looks like what should have been there in the first place.

on the other hand (no pun) if you have the dial actuator (SR5, Limited) it's just a matter if whether you like the standard knob. seemed kinda uselessly big and blocky to me.

first mod i did, actually. i was checking out a TT FJ when i went to take delivery of my '10 TE and noticed how great its shifter would work in the Trail. think i must've had it delivered, modified, and installed by the end of that first week.

Yeah I guess I get that. The shifter knob on the trail is the same I had in the FJ, but I replaced that one also when I did the trans shifter.
