Cutting FJ Shifter Knob to fit the T4R

Just did this today using an Ebay FJC shifter and this thread. Piece of cake.

I would point out that electrical tape is 3/4" wide so an easy way to do this if you are using a hacksaw or similar straight blade to make the cut, is wrap a piece of electrical tape around the shaft and simply cut on the edge of the tape, you will be at exactly the correct spacing.

It took me about 5 minutes to do this following the directions here.

Now I'm going to go buy a vial of black Testors enamel paint and paint in the recessed numbers on the transfer case knob. Should be as easy as: fill the voids in, wipe off the excess.

Yeah, it's funny the shit you never knew you needed until you saw someone else with it! Soon as I saw the FJ knob on the "what did you do to your 5th gen" thread I was like... "MUST HAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

This is a perfect example of WTF, Toyota? It makes no sense to have mismatched knobs from the factory, especially when they have a matching knob in their parts inventory already.

I actually saw it in the "What did you do to your 5th gen" thread too, then a quick search found this thread, 5 min later it was on order. I got both the t-case and main shifter, looking forward to this as I've never really liked the factory monster shift knob either it looks out of place.

If you don't mind, what did you pay and from where? I tried to find one used on the forums, had a buddy looking on the FJ forums, nada.

Interestingly, my request on the FJ forums through my buddy did yield one response - a guy who makes billet knobs for the FJ and Taco wants to get into making them for the 4R, and he is going to make me a set in exchange for my reviewing them and posting pics. So that's cool.

I must have gotten lucky we'll see. I looked it up on eBay right before I posted and got the trans and t-case shifter together for $25 shipped.

Thanks for the write up, here are my results with the FJ Silver T-Case knob. The silver seems to match the rest of the interior pretty well. Probably should've cleaned up a little for the pics, oh well.

Was your OEM shifter not silver top? My t case was.

It was solid flat black, but otherwise identical (textures, pattern, mold).

you have to cut off all but about 1/8 inch of the skinny part and remove the middle silver spacer. it takes a little more effort, but worth in IMHO

So I see there's two shift knobs listed on the Toyota parts diagram. One with metal trim and one without metal. I want the silver trimmed one to make my Trail transfer case shifter. I want the one listed with metal trim correct??

Ordered one, now my shift knob will match the 4wd knob. So silly that they don't match from the factory.

Haha. Sorry man. I ordered the one with the metal trim. Just trying to make sure it's the right one. Black and silver.

I've got the TRD shift knob now, but I'm not really liking the sharp-ish lip where the silver meets the leather in the front of it.

Lol, it's all good. I had actually seen this almost a year ago, but didn't do it then because the only knobs I could find were $100 plus. Just found one for $50s shipped, so had to get it.

Was debating between just popping off the silver bottom piece and cutting it to fit. Deciding to bite the bullet and go with cutting and sanding. Even with a miter box the cut wasn't quite straight, but I was able to sand it 99.9% flat. Turned out pretty good overall. Just gotta decide if I like this or the TRD shift knob better now.
