CV axle replacement recommendations

Sorry for a possibly stupid question but, whats wrong with the re-manufactured axles from the toyota dealership? I just bought two a few weeks ago for $92 each. There was a core charge but I had my axles in hand and didn't have to pay it.
Here is a picture of them...

That's crazy I called a few dealerships near me and they want $230 for each one! How'd the prices get so jacked??

+1 for CVJ!! Dealing with them was painless they answered all of my questions. Told me there was a 2 week back order. Axles shipped out 4 days later. I installed them last Friday tried them out in the desert on Sunday. No issues so far! Returned my cores Monday and received an email Wednesday saying I got my full core refund. Money was back in my account this morning.

Ok so I have been looking into this reman vs super $$ and aftermarket axle thing and I was told that you can tell on 96-2001 I think If it's an OEM or reman that the axle between the boots will look like an hourglass. Slightly tapered on the outsides and skinner in the center. The see is the only ones that most placet will take as a core as they don't want the aftermarket axles due to the fact that they can not rebuild and resell. I am going with OEM from the dealer and will let you know what I find as I just broke my passenger side inner axle. The axles I had in were from Riley's and had less than 20k on them.
This is what i was told and we will see.

I'm running CVJs (9168R) and I don't have any complaints other than being a bit pricey.
Though I'm not sure what the point of their core charge is, seems like kikery to me. Why would I let you withhold $200 of my money just you to take in my old parts to profit with, only to get that money back and not see a dime of profit myself? In fact you lose money since you pay for the shipping back to them, which was about $100. You're effectively handing them a paycheck on a silver platter for nothing in return - unless I'm missing something here?

That's how core charges work. It encourages you to return the old parts so they can refurbish them and sell them on to the next person. If they didn't do that, they wouldn't have any stock to sell to you.

My point is nothing about that is encouragement, if anything it's discouragement because it only costs you more and you lose half your deposit just by trying to send the parts to GET said deposit.

If I have to pay extra to not have to do this again then it's worth it. Nothing will get this broken shaft out. OEM axles and a new shaft with seal and bearings are going in so hopefully, this won't happen.

But you're getting stronger parts & boots. If you dont wheel hard go get some New Napa MaxDrives. Or OEM rebuilds (which are almost the same price as CVJ) because Toyota doesn't make these new anymore.

Glad to see you are still on here.

Not saying don't go with CVJ outright, just saying their core charge seems like monkey business. Been very happy with my axles so far

CVJ with high angle inner boots is the way to go; OEM CV's in general really.

I've been successful with O'Reilly's Ext Travel axles though, and if anything did happen, they've got lifetime warranty on them.

Which CVJ are you guys going with? From what I can tell, of all the options they offer, the only variation between them is the boots...

looking back over this thread, it sounds like the "high angle" boot they offer has caused as many issues as it has solved

I believe you are correct in that it's just the boots that change. Most go with either of the cheapest two they offer, the 9168 and 9168R. Where are you seeing all these supposed problems they cause, aside from a single post from 7 years ago?

I went with the 9808 TR and haven’t had any problems so far. They have been on for about a month. I’ve been out on a few different trails mostly moderate trails. I’m really happy with them at this point in time.

Guess I’m guilty of giving too much weight to the one problem report.

I’ve decided to reboot my oem parts... boots aren’t torn, just leaking grease

the cvj remans, with their hefty $95 core charge, rival the best online dealer prices I found such as at camelback and lakeland

I'm struggling with this myself.

I have tried a couple of OEM parts dealers, and they all say Toyota reman CV axles are on "national back order" with no real date of if or when they will be in stock (prices have been $140 to $180 PLUS $75 core charge).

I'm trying to decide if I should continue to wait, or go with CVJ remans?

My '00 4Runner is NOT lifted and I don't expect to take it over any extreme trails. For CVJ, I'm looking at the 9168 T (currently $219 each plus $95 core) unless someone suggests otherwise.

Let me know your thoughts or experience.

Thanks

Lee

Hi Lee - I realize this is over a year later but it’s the same problem I’m having. I got a remanufactured from Camelback installed back in June but now I’ve been waiting a month for them to get me another because they are on “national backorder”. I’m thinking about doing a NAPA instead for this other side because it’s 1/2 the price and I can get it in a couple of days. Getting tired of waiting - I’d just like my Camelback $ back and finish the job. I don’t wheel hard so I’m guessing the NAPA will be fine for me, but I’d like to hear if anybody has recent NAPA experience.

I've got the Napa 1258 axles. They can be had on RockAuto under the name "Trakmotive" and are half the price there. I paid about $450 for the two axles from Napa, but they were brand new, have a lifetime warranty and are specifically design for lifted rigs.

So far I've had excellent results. No hard wheeling, or any at all, really. I've driven on the beach with them with no adverse effects. I would absolutely recommend them. They've held up well to elements so far (installed April of this year) and the boots haven't torn or ripped [knock on wood!]

Here's the link to the Napa axles: Just a moment...
