CV Boot replace & strange sound

I have 03 V8 and drove from S FL to Minneapolis for the holidays. After a day or two in MN I noticed a spot of grease on the garage floor. Looked at the boots and noticed a clamp came loose. I likely caught it the day it happened. Took to Toyota dealer. They pulled axle and put a new boot on after cleaning and repacking.

I got home and was washing salt off truck and noticed some grease in wheel well. I look under the truck and notice the clamp on the boot they replaced was off. I do not think it happened on the drive home. It was a week later when i got around to washing the truck. So I drive to Toyota dealer in FL. They redo what was done in MN. Driving home on the interstate I notice a rattle, or more of a knocking sound from underneath in the front. It did not make this noise on the way there. I do not believe enough grease ever came out to cause damage to the CV joint as I think I caught it both times very early. I'm wondering if there could be something they forgot to tighten? It doesn't make any sounds over bumps, just on the interstate at 55mph and up. Seems more pronounced at higher speeds, 70 to 80. A little scary too. Any Ideas? I will be taking it back to dealer but I'm just curious if any one knows about what has to be taken apart to do this job that may not have been put back correctly.

Since the work was done by a dealer, I would take it back to a dealer and let them sort it out. Generally a rattle is something loose. If they repacked the CV, presumable they would have noticed any damage to it, but from what I understand it takes a lot to wear them out, and they make more of a clicking noise while turning when worn.

Thank for reply Will 4R, doesn't sound like clicking from CV joint. More of a deep knocking when suspension is moving while driving on the interstate at high speeds. Almost sounds like a shock knowcking but I would think I would hear that going slow over bumps.

That could be a number of things. It could be a CV joint, could be the axle nut just isn't on tight enough or a few other things. I'd let the dealer check it out. with grease slinging out of the boot on a trip that long at higher speeds, my guess is damage to the CV joint itself.

I don't think that the boot started to leak during the trip there or the trip back. I think it happened a day or two after the long drive. When I first caught it up North there was hardly any grease arount the boot. Some just leaked onto the garage floor. I knew what it was right away. When I got back I noticed no grease until the following week when I washed the car. I drove to Toyota right away. No noise then.

I took the car back. It was making the noise all the way there. I get the service guy in the car and it was still making the noise. Not as loud and he claimed all he heard was the dash rattleing. I don't think it was the dash. They took it in and put it in the air. They tell me everything is tight and the repair was done correctly.

It is still making the noise. not as much and not as loud. I have no idea. I just know that the truck has never made that noise until yesterday. I did look under the truck and can see where the repaired shaft goes into the diff there is a little space and un the original shaft there is no space. It looks like I can see a washer in the space. I told the service guy that. I will look for something loose when I get home. Maybe the skid is loose somewhere. Or maybe my truck just developed a new rattle.
